Some believe the royals have done enough to distance themselves from Andrew\u2019s actions but while he \u201cmay not have been on the Buckingham Palace balcony for a while\u201d, any distinction between him and the royals, \u201cis entirely lost on most people\u201d as \u201cthe Palace, the Royal Family, the monarchy, all seem as one\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But where there might be a distinction is between the actions of the family and the future of the monarchy, said Jonathan Dimbleby, the King\u2019s biographer and friend. \u201cI don\u2019t think that it damages the monarchy,\u201d he said of the arrest to the BBC. \u201cI think we have to separate the notion of a family from the institution of the monarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans \u201chope that the scandal will lead to the collapse of the crown itself\u201d, said <a target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/britain\/2026\/02\/19\/what-andrew-mountbatten-windsors-arrest-means-for-the-monarchy\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/britain\/2026\/02\/19\/what-andrew-mountbatten-windsors-arrest-means-for-the-monarchy\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\">The Economist<\/a>. Graham Smith, chief executive of the campaign group Republic, said Andrew\u2019s arrest \u201cthreatens the whole monarchy\u201d. It\u2019s a sentiment that is \u201cambitious, even if it is a chance to erode support for the institution\u201d, said the magazine. But Andrew does embody a \u201cmonarchy that is reduced in stature in a country that is itself getting poorer and crasser\u201d, said Stanley in The Washington Post. They had hoped that, when it came to this particular scandal, \u201cthe worst was past\u201d.
