Eric Dane<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s friends had a specific reason for setting up a GoFundMe campaign<\/a> to support the late actor\u2019s family following his death at 53.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy friend of almost two decades just left us after a brutal battle with ALS,\u201d Danes\u2019 pal Mike McGuiness<\/strong> wrote via Instagram<\/a> on Friday, February 20. \u201cI\u2019m the positive spin guy and can come up with something hopeful in most any situation. This one broke me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Us Weekly <\/i>confirmed on Thursday, February 19, that Dane died at age 53<\/a> after a battle with ALS.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,\u201d a statement from Dane\u2019s family read. \u201cHe spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dane is survived by his two daughters, whom he shared with Rebecca Gayheart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,\u201d the family\u2019s statement continued. \u201cHe will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he\u2019s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the hours after Dane\u2019s tragic death, a GoFundMe page was created by \u201cfriends of the Dane family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCOVID and ALS did a number on his work life and he, sadly, couldn\u2019t leave his family with the resources he had hoped,\u201d McGuiness explained in his Instagram upload. \u201cA GoFundMe is being made and I will post it on my story for anyone able to help.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fundraiser has raised more than $168,900, at the time of publication, including a $27,000 donation<\/a> from Euphoria <\/i>creator Sam Levinson<\/strong>. (Dane was best known for roles on Grey\u2019s Anatomy, Euphoria, The Last Ship, Burlesque, Valentine\u2019s Day <\/i>and more.)<\/p>\n

Even as his own health declined, he remained deeply committed to helping others facing the same devastating disease.\u201d<\/p>\n

The description further states that the campaign was created to \u201csupport [Dane\u2019s] girls and their future needs.\u201d<\/p>\n
