After drawing social media backlash for suggesting filmmakers should \u201cstay out of politics,\u201d German director Wim Wenders<\/a> and his fellow jurors at the 76th Berlin Film Festival delivered a pointed rebuttal of sorts, awarding the festival\u2019s top prizes to a number of overtly political films.<\/p>\n

Top prize, the Golden Bear for best film, went to Ilker \u00c7atak<\/a>\u2019s Yellow Letters<\/a>, a drama following Derya<\/a> (\u00d6zg\u00fc Namal<\/a>) and Aziz (Tansu Bi\u00e7er<\/a>), two Turkish theater artists who lose their jobs due to political persecution from Turkey\u2019s authoritarian government. Though set in Ankara and Istanbul, Yellow Letters<\/a> is shot entirely in Germany, with \u00c7atak making no effort to disguise the fact, hinting that what has happened in Ankara can also happen in Berlin.<\/p>\n

Awarding the Golden Bear, Wenders called Yellow Letters<\/a>, a drama of \u201cthe political language of totalitarianism as opposed to the empathetic language of cinema.\u201d<\/p>\n
