LONDON (AP) \u2014 Hollywood stars and British celebrities, from Paddington Bear to the Princess of Wales, gathered Sunday for the British Academy Film Awards, where politically charged thriller \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d and blues-steeped epic \u201cSinners\u201d led the field of nominees.<\/p>\n
The two films snagged early prizes, with Wunmi Mosaku taking the supporting actress award for \u201cSinners,\u201d and Sean Penn winning the supporting actor trophy for \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSinners\u201d writer-director Ryan Coogler also won the prize for best original screenplay.<\/p>\n
Oddsmakers suggest Shakespearean family tragedy \u201cHamnet\u201d could beat the front-runners to best picture if British film industry voters respond to the emotionally rich story, earthy English setting and intense performances in Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s adaptation of Maggie O\u2019Farrell\u2019s historical novel.<\/p>\n
Stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, Emma Stone, Cillian Murphy, Glenn Close and Ethan Hawke were among those walking the red carpet outside London\u2019s Royal Festival Hall before a black-tie ceremony hosted by Scottish actor Alan Cumming.<\/p>\n
Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales also attended, three days after William\u2019s uncle Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested by police and held for 11 hours over allegations he sent sensitive government information to the late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. <\/p>\n
The scandal has rocked the royal family led by King Charles III, though William and Kate remain popular standard-bearers for the monarchy. William is due to present an award in his role as president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.<\/p>\n
Among the biggest receptions from gathered fans was for Paddington, the puppet bear who stars in a musical stage adaption of the beloved children’s classic.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne Battle\u201d went into the ceremony with 14 nominations, including best picture and acting nods for five of its cast. \u201cSinners\u201d was just behind with 13, while \u201cHamnet\u201d and the ping-pong odyssey \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d each had 11 nominations.<\/p>\n
Guillermo del Toro\u2019s reimagining of \u201cFrankenstein\u201d and Norwegian family drama \u201c Sentimental Value\u201d each got eight nominations.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrankenstein\u201d took awards for production design and for the hair and makeup artists who spent 10 hours a day transforming Jacob Elordi into the movie’s monstrous creature.<\/p>\n
The British prizes, officially called the EE BAFTA Film Awards, often provide hints about who will win at Hollywood\u2019s Academy Awards, held this year on March 15. In the Oscar nominations, \u201cSinners\u201d leads the race with a record 16 nominations, followed by \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d with 13.<\/p>\n
Cumming told the audience that it had been a strong year for cinema, if not a cheerful one, with nominated films tackling themes including child death, racism and political violence: <\/p>\n
\u201cWatching the films this year was like taking part in a collective nervous breakdown,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s almost as though there are events going on in the real world that are influencing filmmakers.\u201d<\/p>\n
The ceremony was more glitz than gloom, though, including a performance by Ejae, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami \u2014 the voices of animated band HUNTR\/X in box office juggernaut \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d \u2014 singing the movie hit \u201cGolden.\u201d<\/p>\n
The BAFTA best film nominees are \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d \u201cHamnet,\u201d \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d \u201cSinners\u201d and \u201cSentimental Value.\u201d The BAFTAs also have a distinctly British accent, with a separate category for best British film. Its 10 nominees include \u201cThe Ballad of Wallis Island,\u201d \u201cPillion,\u201d \u201cI Swear\u201d and \u201cBridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Directing contenders are Paul Thomas Anderson for \u201cOne Battle,\u201d Josh Safdie for \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d Coogler for \u201cSinners,\u201d Yorgos Lanthimos for dystopian tragicomedy \u201cBugonia,\u201d Joachim Trier for \u201cSentimental Value\u201d and Zhao for \u201cHamnet.\u201d Zhao will be the first female director to win two BAFTAs if she takes the prize. She won the directing award in 2021 for \u201cNomadland.\u201d<\/p>\n
Best leading actor nominees are bookies\u2019 favorite Chalamet for \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d DiCaprio for \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d Ethan Hawke for Broadway biopic \u201cBlue Moon,\u201d Michael B. Jordan for \u201cSinners,\u201d Jesse Plemons for \u201cBugonia\u201d and Robert Aramayo for playing an advocate for people with Tourette\u2019s syndrome in biographical drama \u201cI Swear.\u201d <\/p>\n
The leading actress category includes the strongly favored Jessie Buckley for her performance as Agnes Hathaway, wife of William Shakespeare, in \u201cHamnet.\u201d She\u2019s up against Rose Byrne for \u201cIf I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You,\u201d Kate Hudson for \u201cSong Sung Blue,\u201d Chase Infiniti for \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d Renate Reinsve for \u201cSentimental Value\u201d and Emma Stone for \u201cBugonia.\u201d<\/p>\n
The best-documentary prize went to \u201cMr. Nobody Against Putin,\u201d about a Russian teacher who documented the propaganda imposed on Russian schools after the invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
The film’s American director David Borenstein said that teacher Pavel Talankin had shown that \u201cwhether it\u2019s in Russia or the streets of Minneapolis, we always face a moral choice,” referring to the protests against US immigration enforcement in Minnesota. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe need more Mr. Nobodies,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
It beat documentaries including Mstyslav Chernov\u2019s harrowing Ukraine war portrait \u201c2000 Meters to Andriivka, \u201d co-produced by The Associated Press and Frontline PBS. <\/p>\n
Most BAFTA winners are chosen by 8,500 members of the U.K. academy of industry professionals. Contenders for the Rising Star award \u2014 the only prize decided by public vote and a reliable picker of future A-listers \u2014 are Infiniti, Aramayo, \u201cSinners\u201d star Miles Caton and British actors Archie Madekwe and Posy Sterling.<\/p>\n
Donna Langley, the U.K.-born chairwoman of NBCUniversal Entertainment, will be awarded the British Academy\u2019s highest honor, the BAFTA fellowship.<\/p>\n
The ceremony airs on BBC in the United Kingdom starting at 7 p.m. (1900 GMT) and on E! in the U.S. at 8 p.m. EST.<\/p>\n
