Hamnet director Chloe Zhao has said she has a \u201cvery personal\u201d connection with Ireland and that the film has \u201csome energy\u201d from the country, while speaking at the 2026 Bafta film awards.<\/p>\n
The hit film took home two gongs at this year\u2019s ceremony and showcases Irish talent, having been adapted from author Maggie O\u2019Farrell\u2019s award-winning novel and starring actors Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal.<\/p>\n
Buckley takes the lead as Shakespeare\u2019s wife, Agnes Hathaway \u2013 historically known as Anne \u2013 in the film, which follows the family life of William Shakespeare after the death of their young son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Ian West)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nDuring the winner\u2019s press conference, Chinese filmmaker Zhao spoke about the Irish influence on the film after it took home the prize for outstanding British film.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cI have a very personal connection with Ireland, and I can\u2019t share what that is.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut the land and the culture and the desire to try to remember what might have been forgotten and passed away from that culture is really, really strong.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I met Maggie and read her book, I felt that, yes, this is a story about Shakespeare\u2019s family, but for some reason, her being Irish has something to do with it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s some spirit. There\u2019s some energy in it that came from her part of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Ian West)<\/span><\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nSpeaking about when Zhao proposed the casting for Hamnet, O\u2019Farrell joked: \u201cI said, \u2018did you actually do any auditions, or did you just go straight to Ireland and you didn\u2019t come back?’\u201d<\/p>\n
The novelist, who is from Coleraine in Northern Ireland, continued: \u201cBut they were just simply the best people for the job. All the cast, I think were just so perfectly cast.\u201d<\/p>\n
During the press conference, Zhao also praised O\u2019Farrell for the \u201ctransforming experience\u201d of the film, and called taking part in the making of Hamnet a life-changing experience.<\/p>\n
She added: \u201cFrom now on we can always look across the room and go, \u2018we were there, transformed by that experience from the forest to (Shakespeare\u2019s) Globe theatre.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alongside the outstanding British film award, Buckley, from Killarney in Co Kerry, took home the best actress gong.<\/p>\n
Mescal, from Dublin, has received a string of nominations across the awards season for Hamnet but has yet to receive a prize for his role.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Buckley is a frontrunner for the Oscars and has dominated the awards season, having so far proved unbeatable for her role in the hit film.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
