Earlier this month, ICE agents shot and killed Renee Good, an act that the Trump administration has consistently deemed as self-defense. Last week, Border Patrol agents also killed anti-ICE protestor Alex Pretti, sparking increased outrage and protests throughout the Minnesotan city.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat\u2019s going on in this country right now is absolutely horrific,\u201d Natalie Portman told Deadline<\/i><\/a> while donning \u201cICE Out\u201d and \u201cBe Good\u201d pins. \u201cWhat the federal government, Trump\u2019s government, Kristi Noem, ICE\u2014what they\u2019re doing is really the worst of the worst of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n Olivia Wilde and Zoey Deutch joined Portman in wearing \u201cICE Out\u201d pins in solidarity with anti-ICE protestors and immigrant rights activists. \u201cI\u2019m appalled and sickened. We can\u2019t go another day just sort of accepting this as our new norm. People are being murdered,\u201d Wilde told Variety<\/i><\/a> on Sundance\u2019s red carpet. The film she directed, The Invite<\/i>, sparked an intense bidding war<\/a> during the film festival. \u201cWe\u2019re all here getting to celebrate something really beautiful and hopeful in film storytelling. But the world is hurting right now, and this country is hurting.\u201d<\/p>\n Edward Norton, who stars in The Invite<\/i>, echoed the sentiment<\/a> in The Hollywood Reporter: \u201cWe\u2019re sitting here talking about movies while an illegal army is being mounted against U.S. citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n Sundance has long served as a site for political expression and activism. Last year, the festival was home to pro-Palestine demonstrations<\/a> and, in 2017, it was met with the Women\u2019s March on Main<\/a>. Tensions have escalated during this year\u2019s edition, perhaps most clearly reflected in a man\u2019s racially-charged assault<\/a> of Florida Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost. Frost sustained the attack during CAA\u2019s Sundance party last weekend, after being warned that he would be \u201cdeported.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI was assaulted by a man at Sundance Festival who told me that Trump was going to deport me before he punched me in the face,\u201d Frost, who identifies as Afro-Latino, wrote on X<\/a> the day after the assault. \u201cHe was heard screaming racist remarks as he drunkenly ran off. The individual was arrested and I am okay.\u201d<\/p>\n Across the country, protests have erupted in response to federal brutality throughout Minneapolis. There are also calls for a \u201cnationwide day of no school, no work, and no shopping\u201d on January 30, 2026, according to TIME<\/i><\/a>. ICE agents have killed eight people<\/a> so far this year, including Luis Gustavo N\u00fa\u00f1ez C\u00e1ceres, Geraldo Lunas Campos, and V\u00edctor Manuel D\u00edaz. In 2025, federal agents fatally shot at least 32 people while in ICE custody, including Keith Porter Jr. on New Year\u2019s Eve.
