The BAFTAs (aka the British Oscars) produced some pretty incredible headlines Sunday night: <\/span>Wunmi Mosaku<\/b> won best supporting actress and <\/span>Sean Penn<\/b> won best supporting actor, giving us <\/span>no clear favorite<\/span><\/a> for these awards as we enter the Oscars home stretch. <\/span>Paul Mescal<\/b> and <\/span>Gracie Abrams<\/b> made their <\/span>red carpet debut<\/span><\/a> as a couple. (Sob.) And English actor <\/span>Robert Aramayo<\/b> beat out <\/span>Leonardo DiCaprio<\/b>, <\/span>Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/b>, <\/span>Michael B. Jordan<\/b>, <\/span>Ethan Hawke<\/b>, and <\/span>Jesse Plemons<\/b> for best actor. (No, I hadn\u2019t heard of him either!) Aramayo stars in a British movie called <\/span>I Swear<\/span><\/i>, about real-life Scottish Tourette Syndrome activist <\/span>John Davidson<\/b> who\u2019s \u201c[<\/span>educated] the nation about the condition<\/span>,\u201d <\/span>according to the <\/span>Guardian<\/span><\/i><\/a>, and who was given an Order of the British Empire honor by <\/span>Queen Elizabeth II<\/b> in 2019. The movie shows him shouting <\/span>\u201cFuck the queen!\u201d shortly before meeting her.<\/span><\/p>\n Which brings us to the story that\u2019s unfortunately becomethe main BAFTA headline. Davidson was in the audience, which makes sense, given that a movie based on his life was nominated for multiple awards. Host <\/span>Alan Cumming<\/b> at one point thanked the audience for \u201cunderstanding and helping create a respectful space for everyone,\u201d while hearing \u201csome strong language in the background [which] can be part of how Tourette\u2019s syndrome shows up for some people.\u201d That strong language included a \u201cfuck you\u201d and a \u201cshut the fuck up\u201d and then, horribly, the n-word while Jordan and his co-star <\/span>Delroy Lindo<\/b> presented an award.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I\u2019ve waded through the internet muck this morning so you don\u2019t have, but I also suspect you could probably predict how bad the discourse has developed\u2014though if you\u2019re cynical enough, people\u2019s attempts to out woke-each other on anti-ableism vs. anti-racism might make you snort.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Jamie Foxx<\/b> has <\/span>weighed in<\/span><\/a>, and I think it\u2019s only a matter of time before other celebrities offer their takes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Curiously, the BAFTAs took place two hours before they were broadcast on the BBC, so the network had ample time to tweak what the general public saw\u2014and plenty of things <\/span>were<\/span><\/i> edited out. <\/span>Akinola Davies Jr.<\/b>, who won the \u201coutstanding debut\u201d award, ended his speech with, \u201cFor Nigeria, for London, the Congo, <\/span>Sudan<\/span>. Free Palestine.\u201d Guess which phrase was edited out of the broadcast? And the BBC also nixed a line from Cummings comparing the plot of Zootopia 2\u2014\u201d<\/span>Lies, corrupt leaders, poisoning and persecution of a race\u201d\u2014to the contemporary United States. So thanks, BBC, for causing further offense to countless people and prompting deeply insensitive and uninformed discourse about mental illness. Really, top notch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I hate to be earnest in our daily gossip column, but the whole situation is just so sad. The incident overshadowed Aramayo\u2019s exciting upset win; Jordan and Lindo\u2019s movie (Sinners) winning a bunch of awards; and the general excitement of an Oscars where it looks like a lot of races could be anybody\u2019s game (except best actress and best director. <\/span>Jessie Buckley<\/b> and <\/span>Paul Thomas Anderson <\/b>both won again last night).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Anyway, in conclusion, <\/span>watch TikTokker sh4ysgrwm<\/span><\/a> on the subject.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n
