EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert<\/em>, out now in IMAX, brings the whimsy. In the new film\u2014which, by Luhrmann\u2019s description, is neither a documentary, exactly, nor a concert film (though it has elements of both)\u2014Presley has arrived at the International Hotel for what will, unbeknownst to him, turn into a seven-year residency. It\u2019s around 1969 and he\u2019s 34, still in his prime.<\/p>\nWhat makes up most of EPiC<\/em>\u2019s jam-packed 90-minute runtime is footage\u2014recorded by MGM for two early \u201970s concert films and then left to rot in a salt mine in Kansas, which Luhrmann discovered during his research for Elvis<\/em>\u2014of Presley in rehearsals and then on stage, where he runs through a repertoire that includes his greatest hits (\u201cHound Dog,\u201d \u201cJailhouse Rock\u201d), some new material (\u201cBurning Love\u201d), covers (\u201cYesterday,\u201d \u201cBridge Over Troubled Water\u201d), and gospel songs (\u201cHow Great Thou Art,\u201d \u201cOh Happy Day\u201d). It\u2019s an amazing showcase, underscoring the range of his musical tastes (and beauty of his voice); the lunacy of his fans, who fling themselves into his path at every opportunity; and, possibly more than anything, his endearing goofiness, both in public and behind the scenes.<\/p>\nWe spoke to Luhrmann about his collaborators on the new film, the magic tricks he employed for the soundtrack, and deciding to let Presley speak for himself.<\/p>\n
Vogue<\/em>: To start, I\u2019d love to know how or when you landed on the genius title for this project.<\/strong><\/p>\nBaz Luhrmann:<\/strong> Yeah, you think, why didn\u2019t someone else come up with that before? Jonathan Redmond and I were partners in this, and to be honest, I just know we were riffing around ideas\u2014Elvis<\/em> something, Elvis in Concert<\/em>. The acronym might\u2019ve been Jonathan, it might\u2019ve been me, it could\u2019ve been Fletch. We had a thread with everybody on it, a group chat, and we were calling it things like Elvis Walks in the Park<\/em> or something. I said, \u201cWell, what about Elvis Presley Concert<\/em> or Elvis Presley\u2019s Concert<\/em>?\u201d And then we went, \u201cHang on\u2014that\u2019s EPIC. Great title for the movie!\u201d<\/p>\nPeter Jackson, I know, helped you to restore the footage you found. His Get Back<\/em> documentary about the Beatles was such a moment. Did you watch that at the time?
