His\u00a0partner, the\u00a0celebrated pianist <strong>Christina Petrowska\u00a0Quilico<\/strong>,\u00a0is now sharing\u00a0new insights into her\u00a0husband\u2019s life and career\u00a0through archival recordings of conversations the couple had before Louis\u2019s passing in 2000. Those recordings are being turned into a 23-part podcast entitled <em><strong>Opera Stories: Speaking Personally<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were collaborating on a book,\u201d Petrowska\u00a0Quilico\u00a0shares about how the conversations were first made. \u201cWe did\u00a0maybe two\u00a0weeks of conversations, just asking questions that popped into my head at a time. This way, there were conversations in his words and exactly what he wanted to say about music.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=\/TqcCy9giny4\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=\/TqcCy9giny4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Petrowska\u00a0Quilico\u00a0adds that because the conversations were between a husband and wife, the podcast reads less as a biography and more as an unfiltered window into their careers with the trust that can only come from partners. \u201cThere was no fakery about it,\u201d she says, adding that\u00a0there was no concept of sharing recordings through something like a podcast since the medium did not yet exist. \u201cWe\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0putting out any kind of mood or whatever. We were just talking.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of these conversations, the couple revisits famous performances in places like San Francisco and New York City and speak about music through their own artistic lenses, each very distinct from the other. Petrowska\u00a0Quilico\u00a0made her name on the keyboards with interpretations of contemporary classical compositions from composers like Ann Southam while her husband\u2019s career was defined by performances of characters in the operatic canon.\u00a0Despite these differences, they each remained appreciative and supportive of each other\u2019s work and inspired each other along the way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was doing the Liszt transcriptions \u2013 there were <em>Rigoletto <\/em>and <em>Lucia [di Lammermoor] <\/em>and I did some others \u2013 we as pianists tend to think of the fast notes and everything,\u201d Petrowska\u00a0Quilico\u00a0recalls, \u201cand he said, \u2018It\u2019s too fast.\u2019 I said, \u2018No,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0got to be. Every pianist plays it like this,\u2019&#8230; and he said, \u2018No, breathe, breathe, feel the phrase,\u2019 so that was wonderful. And with the contemporary music, he was such a good supporter. I know he\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0like much contemporary music, but he found things in it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Louis and Christina Quilico: Rachmaninoff &quot;In the Silence of the Night&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MX4J3fxcAI0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0Quilico\u00a0has been gone now for a quarter century, Petrowska\u00a0Quilico\u00a0says\u00a0that she preserves his musical legacy through the lessons he shared with her as she continues to teach. \u201cHe used to talk about\u00a0\u2018trust your own voice\u2019,\u201d she recalls. \u201cWhen he won the Metropolitan Opera auditions in his late 20\u2019s&#8230; they wanted to turn him into a bass. He said no, and then they said, \u2018Well, we\u2019d like you to sing Mozart,\u2019 and Louis said, \u2018No,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0a Verdi baritone.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0what my voice is,\u2019 and he quit and he went to Covent Garden.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amidst the professional remembrances in <em>Opera Stories: Speaking Personally<\/em>\u00a0are personal remembrances that show what the couple were like as people, not just musicians.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0something that Petrowska\u00a0Quilico\u00a0remembers whenever she puts on one of his recordings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe loved to sing right up until the end,\u201d she smiles\u00a0in memory. \u201cYou take him to an Italian restaurant, and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0it.\u00a0He\u2019ll\u00a0be singing songs all night with accompaniment if there was no piano there. And in\u00a0Venice\u00a0on the gondola,\u00a0singing songs to me.
