In the cease-and-desist letters, Netflix called Seedance \u201ca high-speed privacy engine\u201d;Warner Bros. argued that ByteDance used their materials to train its AI model, citing \u201ca deliberate design choice\u201d; and Disney claimed that the usage was a \u201cvirtual smash-and-grab\u201d of their IP. <\/p>\n<p>This backlash was first triggered by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2026-02-13\/brad-pitt-fighting-tom-cruise-ai-video-shakes-hollywood\">a viral AI video of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise fighting<\/a>, a little over a week ago. Due to its realistic nature and unauthorized use of the actors\u2019 likenesses, both SAG-AFTRA and MPA were among the first to call out the platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a single day, the Chinese AI service Seedance 2.0 has engaged in unauthorized use of U.S. copyrighted works on a massive scale,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2026-02-13\/brad-pitt-fighting-tom-cruise-ai-video-shakes-hollywood\">Charles Rivkin, chief executive of the Motion Picture Assn., previously wrote in a statement. <\/a>\u201cBy launching a service that operates without meaningful safeguards against infringement, ByteDance is disregarding well-established copyright law that protects the rights of creators and underpins millions of American jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amid this legal flurry, ByteDance, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2026-01-23\/keep-scrolling-tiktok-has-finalized-its-us-joint-venture\">the company that also oversees TikTok<\/a>, put out a statement to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/16\/bytedance-safegaurds-seedance-ai-copyright-disney-mpa-netflix-paramount-sony-universal.html\" target=\"_blank\">CNBC<\/a>, writing that it \u201crespects intellectual property rights\u201d and is \u201ctaking steps to strengthen current safeguards as we work to prevent the unauthorized use of intellectual property and likeness by users.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The MPA said in its letter that \u201cat this point we need far more than general statements.\u201d The association rejects ByteDance\u2019s characterization of the infringement as unauthorized use of intellectual property by its users.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather, it is ByteDance itself that trained its model on the MPA Member Studios\u2019 works without their consent (a necessary first step toward its production of infringing output),\u201d the MPA said, adding that ByteDance \u201creleased its service without guardrails; and, by its own conduct, reproduced and distributed content that blatantly infringes the MPA Member Studios\u2019 copyrights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luke Arrigoni, CEO of Loti AI, a company specializing in likeness protection technology, said he isn\u2019t surprised the industry has reached a \u201cbreaking point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat ByteDance did with Seedance 2.0 is a clear illustration of what happens when AI companies treat human creativity as raw material rather than protected work,\u201d said Arrigoni in a statement. \u201cThe MPA\u2019s action sends a clear message that the entertainment industry will not subsidize the AI industry\u2019s growth at the expense of its own rights.
