Mr Anderson told Mr Sherborne that the notion he had known the material had come from phone hacking was \u201ccooked up\u201d by \u201cyour people\u201d.<\/p>\n
He said he had \u201cnever\u201d commissioned Miskiw and had never commissioned anyone to commit phone hacking.<\/p>\n
Mr Anderson sent a memo to Liz Hartley, Associated\u2019s legal director, in December 2018 after Johnson contacted the publisher to reveal plans to publish a story about the emails on the Byline Investigates website.<\/p>\n
In the memo, he described how he had felt he was being blackmailed during a call from Johnson in June 2016.<\/p>\n
Mr Johnson is said to have warned that Mr Anderson\u2019s alleged unlawful activity would form the basis of a legal case against the Mail.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe (Johnson) said he was \u2018authorised\u2019 to tell me that if I co-operated with his enquiries into the Mail group, then the emails would be kept private,\u201d Mr Anderson wrote.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe wanted to expose phone hacking within the Daily Mail. I suggested he was threatening me.\u201d<\/p>\n
When Johnson gave evidence in the case last month, Antony White KC, for Associated, put it to him: \u201cThis was a threat tantamount to blackmail, wasn\u2019t it Mr Johnson?\u201d<\/p>\n
Johnson replied: \u201cNo it\u2019s not blackmail. Blackmail is a serious criminal offence.\u201d<\/p>\n
He suggested that Mr Anderson\u2019s written account of the call was \u201ca monkeyed up memo\u201d designed to serve his own agenda.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
