There\u2019s something quietly powerful about a Lizzie Cullen performance. When she joined Saturday Showcase this weekend, that same warmth and honesty carried straight into the studio.<\/p>\n
A lot has happened since her last visit \u2014 new releases, a BBC Introducing moment, and one gig she describes as her favourite yet.<\/p>\n
One of the standout highlights from the past year was opening a show at the Corn Exchange in Newbury \u2014 performing a full set of her own original material.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got to sing all my own original songs on the keyboard, piano\u2026 everybody listened and was so supportive.\u201d<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t just another date in the diary. It clearly meant something more.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was probably my most favourite gig I\u2019ve ever played so far.\u201d<\/p>\n
She described the atmosphere as \u201cbeautiful\u201d and said everything just came together on the night.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was buzzing afterwards. It was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n
There\u2019s something special about playing to a room that truly listens \u2014 and that sense of connection runs right through Lizzie\u2019s music.<\/p>\n
\u201cI write them when I\u2019m feeling something\u2026 even just for one person to say that it made them think of something\u2026 it really does mean a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n
Listeners heard \u201cTalk to My Piano\u201d, a track that means a lot to her personally and one she wanted people to rediscover.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just want people to hear it a bit more\u2026 because the lyrics mean quite a lot to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
It starts gently and builds, with layered vocals towards the end \u2014 a detail that stood out on air. The song captures that feeling of emotions you can\u2019t quite say out loud, except through music.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt comes out when I sing.\u201d<\/p>\n Since releasing her latest single \u201cSunsets\u201d, Lizzie has also had a boost from BBC Introducing.<\/p>\n After submitting the track, she received the email every emerging artist hopes for \u2014 it had been picked up for airplay.<\/p>\n \u201cThey were going to play it\u2026 which was amazing and really cool to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n She tuned in not just to hear her own track, but to discover other new artists too.<\/p>\n \u201cI love these rabbit holes that you end up going down.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s exactly the kind of platform that opens doors \u2014 both for musicians and for listeners looking for something new.<\/p>\n While some of her earlier releases leaned more into guitar-led pop, Lizzie hinted that her next chapter will lean further into piano \u2014 her first instrument and where she feels most at home musically.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve decided that\u2026 I\u2019m going to lean on the piano a bit more.\u201d<\/p>\n The direction won\u2019t necessarily be slower or softer \u2014 just more rooted in the instrument that shapes her songwriting.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s going to be an interesting year hopefully.\u201d<\/p>\n Her newest single, \u201cSunsets\u201d, was written while on holiday in Cornwall, inspired quite literally by the view outside her room.<\/p>\n \u201cThere was a beautiful sunset\u2026 and at night the stars were incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n Sometimes songs arrive slowly. This one didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n \u201cIf something comes to me I just have to sit at a piano or grab a guitar\u2026 it sometimes does just flow. And it did thankfully.\u201d<\/p>\n She wrote it that evening \u2014 then immediately did what many songwriters do.<\/p>\n \u201cMum, can you listen to this please? I\u2019ve written a new song.\u201d<\/p>\n The track feels reflective \u2014 about memories, growing up, and the moments that quietly shape us.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is about reminiscing\u2026 when you think back about the things that shape us when we\u2019re a bit younger.\u201d<\/p>\n There\u2019s more studio time ahead this year, with plans to release further singles.
