Credit: Associated Press <span class=\"image-credit\"><span class=\"credit-label-wrapper\">Credit:<\/span> Associated Press\/file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ci.ovationtix.com\/36995\/production\/1265897?performanceId=11767263\">ceremony<\/a> in Oakland honoring Rosie the Riveter park ranger <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/richmondside.org\/2025\/12\/21\/betty-reid-soskin-oldest-park-ranger-has-died-at-104\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"459520\">Betty Reid Soskin<\/a> has been sold out.<\/p>\n<p>Reid Soskin <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/richmondside.org\/2025\/12\/21\/betty-reid-soskin-oldest-park-ranger-has-died-at-104\/\">died<\/a> at her Richmond home on Dec. 21 at the age of 104. She was the nation\u2019s oldest park ranger and the namesake of Betty Reid Soskin Elementary School.<\/p>\n<p>During World War II, Reid Soskin worked as a file clerk for the U.S. Air Force. In 1945, she and her husband, Mel Reid, founded Reid\u2019s Records in Berkeley, a small business that specialized in Gospel music. Reid Soskin later became a civil rights songwriter in the 1960s.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-6    \">\n<style><![CDATA[@media ( min-width: 300px ){.newspack_global_ad.scaip-6{min-height: 100px;}}]]><\/style>\n<\/aside>\n<p>She joined the park service at the age of 85. She was known for telling visitors to the Rosie the Riveter\/WWII Home Front National Historical Park about the stories of marginalized World War II workers.<\/p>\n<p>Her family noted on her <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/betty.soskin\">Facebook page<\/a> that the city of Richmond will devote a short portion of its Black History Month event to remembering her.<\/p>\n<p><em>Richmond Black History Celebration, Sat., Feb. 28, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Richmond Memorial Auditorium and Convention Center, 403 Civic Center Plaza. Courtesy of Metropolitan Transportation Commission<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In an effort to help commuters get where they\u2019re going, Bay Area transit providers are standardizing their signage.<\/p>\n<p>The Regional Network Management (RNM) Council has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mtc.ca.gov\/news\/bay-area-transit-agency-leaders-ok-standardized-sign-designs\">approved<\/a> a plan that will standardize signs and maps at train stations, bus stops and other transit hubs.<\/p>\n<p>RNM officials said the goal is to \u201cmake it easier for riders to identify information and use transit by delivering information that is clear, predictable and consistent across service areas and county lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsistent signage at\u00a0the Bay Area\u2019s\u00a0approximately\u00a021,000 transit stops\u00a0is expected to\u00a0improve\u00a0legibility for riders\u00a0and is intended to reduce\u00a0long-term\u00a0design, fabrication and\u00a0maintenance costs for transit agencies,\u201d RNM officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The new signs have already been tested at the El Cerrito del Norte BART station and in Santa Rosa.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-citizens-invited-to-apply-for-county-grand-jury\">Citizens invited to apply for county Grand Jury<\/h3>\n<p>Residents of Contra Costa County have until March 13 to apply to be a member of next year\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/contracosta.courts.ca.gov\/divisions\/civil\/civil-grand-jury\">Contra Costa County Grand Jury<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Grand jurors must be U.S. citizens, 18 years or older and a resident of Contra Costa County for at least one year. They cannot be an elected representative within the county.<\/p>\n<p>Grand jurors should be prepared to devote at least 30 hours per week of service. Members receive a daily stipend of $25 for meetings as well as mileage reimbursements.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The grand jury serves a one-year term that begins on July 1. Jurors are expected to attend a two-week training session in June.<\/p>\n<p>The grand jury members decide which issues they will investigate based on reports from law enforcement, citizens, government agencies and other outlets.<\/p>\n<p>The panel operates as an independent body under the supervision of a Superior Court judge.<\/p>\n<p>About 75 applicants will be selected to be interviewed by a panel of Superior Court judges.
