In theaters.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the middle of the stupefyingly bad seventh \u201cScream\u201d movie, Sidney Prescott asks her daughter\u2019s boyfriend, \u201cDo you know anything about AI?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oh, I screamed all right.<\/p>\n<p>Noooo! Anything but another slapdash horror\u00a0film\u00a0with a lazy plot that hinges on artificial intelligence! <\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s all \u201cScream 7\u201d is \u2014 the same old regurgitated slasher mush Hamburger Helper\u2019d with a dash of AI. It\u2019s a near-lethal dose of nostalgia to anesthetize sad, sad millennials.<\/p>\n<p>The acting, even by the standards of the formulaic \u201ckiller on the loose\u201d genre, is anemic. Neve Campbell again coasts on the fumes of\u00a0dwindling\u00a0affection as Sid. And Isabel May, as Sidney\u2019s personality-free kid Tatum, is a Jennifer Lawrence without the spark. Even the basic jump-scares don\u2019t work. There are more frightening Enya songs.<\/p>\n<p>And at the end when we find out who Ghostface is \u2014 an increasingly random reveal I stopped caring about 20 years ago \u2014 the expressed motive is so garbled and nonsensical that the\u00a0villain\u00a0actually loses their train of thought mid-speech.<\/p>\n<p>That\u00a0telling\u00a0mental hiccup turns out to be a metaphor for this entire overstretched series that lost its way\u00a0ages\u00a0ago after it became the\u00a0target\u00a0of its own mockery and\u00a0has been\u00a0stuck repeating itself. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bland \u201c7\u201d stands as the worst chapter in the 30-year-old franchise, which should have been killed off\u00a0already.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, original writer Kevin Williamson has returned to\u00a0reclaim\u00a0his baby after <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/03\/09\/scream-vi-movie-review-set-in-nyc-but-less-scary\/\">the duo of reboot films<\/a> starring Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera\u00a0he was uninvolved with. Those weren\u2019t any good either, but at least they had pep.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Neve Campbell is back as Sidney Prescott. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Williamson, whose only new idea is \u201cum, Chat GPT!,\u201d borrows the model of\u00a0director\u00a0David Gordon Green\u2019s<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/10\/16\/this-halloween-sequel-is-actually-good\/\"> very good \u201cHalloween\u201d reboot trilogy<\/a>\u00a0except with an unusual twist \u2014 it\u2019s boring and cheap.<\/p>\n<p>Sidney becomes an older-and-wiser Laurie Strode type who must protect her spawn against her mortal enemy.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Sidney\u2019s never-ending tiff with Ghostface is rather less compelling than that of Laurie and Michael Myers, considering that Ghostface can be pretty much anybody with a grievance who drops by a costume shop. In truth, the masked loser hasn\u2019t been freaky in forever.<\/p>\n<p>Sid and fam now live in pretty Pine Grove, Indiana, where she runs a coffee shop. However, she\u2019s far from anonymous. The woman is still mercilessly hounded by true-crime fans.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The reveal of Ghostface is especially terrible. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The rise of real murders as entertainment is just one longtime trend Williams is awkwardly late to.<\/p>\n<p>The opening slaying takes place at a novelty AirBnb that\u2019s been made to look like the house from the \u201cStab\u201d movies. Yawn.<\/p>\n<p>And Sidney\u2019s husband Mark (Joel McHale), the local police chief, earnestly asks, \u201cIsn\u2019t Ben a computer junkie?\u201d as though in 2026 PCs are mysterious new inventions.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s Tatum\u2019s deal?
