Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy says he and other members of Team USA men\u2019s hockey team are \u201ccertainly sorry\u201d for laughing at President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s sexist joke<\/a> about their female counterparts. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

McAvoy was among the many players who could be spotted chuckling in a video of Trump\u2019s congratulatory call <\/a>with the U.S. men\u2019s team, which on Sunday won gold<\/a> at the Winter Olympics for the first time in 46 years. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

During the call, the president joked that he was \u201cgoing to have to bring the women\u2019s team,\u201d which also won gold, to his State of the Union address along with the men\u2019s team or risk being \u201cimpeached.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Footage of the call drew heavy criticism online after going viral on social media. Amid the controversy, the U.S. women\u2019s team formally declined<\/a> Trump\u2019s invitation, citing \u201ctiming and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Speaking to CBS News<\/a> and other outlets Thursday, McAvoy said he regrets his behavior. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201c[I\u2019m] just certainly sorry for how we responded to it in that moment,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know things that just happened really quick there. And if you know the men\u2019s team and if you know the relationships that we have, the amount of time that we\u2019ve spent with the women\u2019s team and how we\u2019ve supported them, it\u2019s certainly not reflective of how we feel and look at them and their accomplishments.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

McAvoy went on to praise the women\u2019s team for their \u201cunbelievable\u201d achievements at the Winter Olympics. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe supported them the same way that they supported us,\u201d he said. \u201cWe share this together, I know that, and I\u2019m pretty confident they know how I feel about them.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Echoing those sentiments was Jake Sanderson<\/a> of the Ottawa Senators, who described his team\u2019s actions as \u201ca mistake\u201d but also noted that \u201cthings got blown out of proportion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe have nothing but the utmost respect for the women,\u201d he said, recalling how it felt to watch them win. \u201cIf we were to do it again, I think we wouldn\u2019t do that, and we made a mistake.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Whether McAvoy and Sanderson\u2019s remarks will be enough to restore the goodwill their team initially enjoyed remains to be seen. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

During his State of the Union address, Trump announced that Team USA men\u2019s goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, would receive<\/a> a Presidential Medal of Freedom \u2015 but did not offer the women\u2019s goalie, Aerin Frankel, the same honor. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
