Conceived as the UK\u2019s only\u202fmusic-first\u202farena,\u00a0Co-op\u00a0Live\u2019s tight bowl, low\u00a0roof\u00a0and steeply raked seating tiers are all designed to pull fans closer to the stage and concentrate energy on the performance. With a maximum capacity of 23,500, it is also the country\u2019s largest indoor live music venue, combining scale with an unusually intimate feel for fans and artists alike. Working alongside architect Populous,\u00a0our\u00a0engineers shaped the bowl geometry and structure to prioritise sightlines,\u00a0proximity\u00a0and atmosphere for live music over more traditional,\u00a0multi-use\u00a0arena layouts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The roof as an engine for live shows\u00a0<\/h3>\n

High above the stage, Co-op Live\u2019s\u00a0long-span\u00a0roof trusses form what\u00a0our\u00a0teams\u00a0have\u00a0described as \u201ca machine that enables the various productions.\u201d\u00a0The steelwork not only spans the main bowl but also supports extensive walkways, rigging strong points and critical show infrastructure for lighting,\u00a0sound\u00a0and large-scale scenic elements. Designed for high rigging capacities and fast changeovers, the roof allows production teams to hang complex touring setups and\u00a0BRIT-scale\u00a0staging night after night without compromising safety or show ambition.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Regenerating a former industrial site\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3>\n

Rob Amphlett,<\/a> Sport and Entertainment Lead at Buro Happold,\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cCo-op Live is a great example of how disused industrial sites can be brought back to life in our cities. The brownfield land was previously home to a gasworks, so we first had to deal with contamination and some really challenging ground conditions to make development possible.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom there, our teams worked on the venue itself, taking a truly multidisciplinary approach to realise a major entertainment landmark that plays a significant role in east Manchester\u2019s wider regeneration and sports-led transformation.\u201d<\/p>\n

By transforming disused industrial land into a\u00a0next-generation\u00a0live entertainment venue, the arena is\u00a0opening up\u00a0major cultural\u00a0moments,\u00a0including\u00a0the BRIT Awards,\u00a0to audiences across the region, rather than concentrating flagship music events exclusively in London. Co-op Live\u2019s location, directly connected into the Etihad Campus transport network, also supports more sustainable travel options for large crowds.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sustainability and next-generation fan experience\u00a0<\/h3>\n

Sustainability is a defining strand of the arena\u2019s concept, with Co-op Live positioned as the UK\u2019s largest and most sustainable indoor arena.
