The artists range from stadium acts to TikTok troubadours to the protesters themselves. They are producing songs that celebrate solidarity, perseverance, and bravery, even in the face of bloodshed.<\/p>\n<p><span>The emergence of this new songbook is, in some respects, a surprise. When Trump came back to power last year, many musicians appeared reticent to engage in overtly political songwriting. My brilliant colleague Meredith Blake marked that troubling silence in a piece headlined: \u201c<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/contrarian.substack.com\/p\/where-is-the-great-anti-trump-protest\" rel=\"\">Where is the great anti-Trump protest song<\/a><span>?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But the brutal street slayings of the poet and mother Renee Good and of the Veterans Affairs nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis \u2014 amid the broader, violent abuses of ICE and the Border Patrol \u2014 have altered the moral and artistic calculus.<\/p>\n<p><span>Below, we survey artists who are denouncing the Trump regime and the presence of its roving <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/immigration\/2025\/11\/30\/chicago-dhs-immigration-midway-blitz\/\" rel=\"\">paramilitary gangs<\/a><span> on the streets of the Twin Cities \u2014 and wherever the fear of mass deportation hangs heaviest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Billy Bragg<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cCity of Heroes\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"youtube2-IKOW2ZikGW8\" data-attrs=\"{&quot;videoId&quot;:&quot;IKOW2ZikGW8&quot;,&quot;startTime&quot;:null,&quot;endTime&quot;:null}\" data-component-name=\"Youtube2ToDOM\" class=\"youtube-wrap\">\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/IKOW2ZikGW8?rel=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;enablejsapi=0\" frameborder=\"0\" loading=\"lazy\" gesture=\"media\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowautoplay=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"728\" height=\"409\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>A fixture of protest music since the 1990s, Bragg brings a deep sense of history to his new song for Minneapolis. \u201cCity of Heroes\u201d plays off the World War II-era poem, \u201c<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hmd.org.uk\/resource\/first-they-came-by-pastor-martin-niemoller\/\" rel=\"\">First They Came<\/a><span>\u201d \u2014 written by a regretful witness of Nazi violence, who stood back as vulnerable groups were rounded up, only to find that, when the jackboots came for him, \u201cthere was no one left to speak out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Above jangly acoustic guitar chords, Bragg celebrates the sharp contrast created by the \u201cheroes\u201d of Minneapolis who \u201clearn the lessons of history\u201d \u2014 standing up for the first targets of fascist violence, instead of opting for \u201csilence\u201d or \u201ccomplicity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>When they came for the refugees<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I got in their face<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When they came for the five-year-olds<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I got in their face<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bruce Springsteen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStreets of Minneapolis\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"youtube2-GDaPdpwA4Iw\" data-attrs=\"{&quot;videoId&quot;:&quot;GDaPdpwA4Iw&quot;,&quot;startTime&quot;:null,&quot;endTime&quot;:null}\" data-component-name=\"Youtube2ToDOM\" class=\"youtube-wrap\">\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/GDaPdpwA4Iw?rel=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;enablejsapi=0\" frameborder=\"0\" loading=\"lazy\" gesture=\"media\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowautoplay=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"728\" height=\"409\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Days after the slaying of Pretti, the Boss released the raw, angry \u201cStreets of Minneapolis,\u201d saluting the resistance of the city\u2019s residents who \u201cfought fire and ICE&#8230; \u2018Neath an occupier\u2019s boots.\u201d The song takes aim at Trump\u2019s authoritarian deputies Stephen Miller and Krisi Noem by name, and it became a viral hit, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/springsteen-minneapolis-itunes\/\" rel=\"\">topping<\/a><span> the iTunes charts in 19 countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The music video features footage of Border Patrol henchman Greg Bovino gassing city residents, as well as the terrified face of 5-year-old Liam Roberts in his bunny hat. But quite different from Bragg and Springsteen\u2019s spare tributes, U2 crafted something more energetic and anthemic with \u201cAmerican Obituary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The track pays tribute to \u201cRenee Good, born to die free,\u201d but also summons courage, with the repetition of a new rock mantra: \u201cThe power of the people is so much stronger than the people in power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The worst can\u2019t kill what\u2019s best in us<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But they can try<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>America will rise<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Against the people of the lie<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesse Welles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cJoin ICE\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Welles has leveraged his platform on TikTok to revive a tradition of American folk music last in vogue in the 1970s. Singing straight to camera with his gravely voice, beat up guitar, and a cutting humor evident in his lyrics, Welles comes across like a latter-day John Prine.<\/p>\n<p><span>Welles has released two songs that cut to the moral rot of Trump\u2019s deportation machine. \u201cJoin ICE\u201d is a darkly ironic tune, seeking to \u201crecruit\u201d new agents to ICE by highlighting the agency\u2019s rock-bottom employment standards and eagerness to give police-rejects a gun. The song can frequently be heard at street protests and earned Welles an appearance on <\/span><em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=61I4hlig78w\" rel=\"\">The Late Show<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We can sneak around town<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Hunt workin\u2019 folks down<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I hear they got a great benefit plan<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood vs. ICE\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"youtube2-El0CLduLgew\" data-attrs=\"{&quot;videoId&quot;:&quot;El0CLduLgew&quot;,&quot;startTime&quot;:null,&quot;endTime&quot;:null}\" data-component-name=\"Youtube2ToDOM\" class=\"youtube-wrap\">\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/El0CLduLgew?rel=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;enablejsapi=0\" frameborder=\"0\" loading=\"lazy\" gesture=\"media\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowautoplay=\"true\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"728\" height=\"409\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>After the senseless homicide of Good in her car, Welles released \u201cGood vs. ICE.\u201d The song imagines a conversation between an ICE agent and a friend (\u201dHow\u2019s work?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, they got us shooting women now\u201d) before Welles insists: \u201cYou probably don\u2019t need to shoot someone in the face, to do the thing that you\u2019re calling a job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019ve had more dangerous encounters at gas station counters<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And the Walmart parking lot<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But the smaller the man the quicker the plan<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Goes to \u201cSomebody\u2019s getting shot\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Street Protest Music<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition to the contributions of professional musicians, protesters themselves are writing simple songs that have featured prominently at ICE Out demonstrations.
