\n\tAfter the news broke Thursday that Paramount had outbid Netflix for the legacy studio<\/a>, the WGA East<\/a> and West weighed in via a joint statement on Friday, once again condemning any act of corporate consolidation.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThe combination is different but the outcome is the same: the proposed Paramount-Warner merger would consolidate control of two major film and television studios and streaming services, and two of the largest employers of writers,\u201d the statement read. \u201cThe loss of competition would be a disaster for writers, consumers and the entire entertainment industry. Many have expressed concerns about any potential merger, but none have taken a hard-line position the way that the WGA has. <\/p>\n \n\tDuring a conversation with reports in January, DGA President Christopher Nolan acknowledged<\/a> \u201cin an ideal world it would continue to function as an independent buyer [and] distributor. That would be the best thing for all members.\u201d However, he also urged that union leadership is \u201ctrying to evaluate the reality of this situation.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tAs of Friday, Warner Bros. Discovery<\/a>\u00a0is selling itself to\u00a0Paramount<\/a>\u00a0for $31 a share in cash in a deal worth $110 billion. The companies unveiled their formal agreement on Friday, after WBD<\/a>\u00a0jilted Netflix, saying it received a Superior Proposal from the\u00a0David Ellison<\/a>\u00a0company.
