\u201cPeople say going out and meeting new people is like riding a bike \u2014 you never forget how \u2014 but it\u2019s far more difficult than that, especially after a long time on your own,\u201d Roy admitted<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
A 78-year-old man is sharing what has helped him \u201cfeel less alone\u201d following the deaths of his longtime wife and their adult son<\/a>.<\/p>\n Roy Ridley explained in an essay \u2014\u00a0titled \u201cSince my wife died, I\u2019ve lost all my friends\u201d and published in The Telegraph<\/em><\/a> on Feb. 21 \u2014\u00a0that among the ways he\u2019s making new friends is through Re-engage<\/a>, a charity that \u201chosts monthly tea parties for the over 75s to help combat isolation.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI get picked up by a volunteer and get to socialize with others my age,\u201d Roy, who still lives in Essex, England, after his wife, Sandra, died in 2009 when she was 56. \u201cIt helps me feel less alone, and gets me out between my travels. Meeting new people helps me look after myself; it helps me dress well and keeps my mind active when I talk to others.\u201d<\/p>\n Roy emphasized how Re-engage has made him feel younger, saying, \u201cI\u2019m 78 this year, but going out and traveling has kept me feeling like I\u2019m 28.\u201d<\/p>\n Elaborating on the title of his essay, Roy shared that although friends and family were \u201cbrilliant\u201d\u00a0to him immediately after Sandra died while they were on a trip in France, \u201ccalls and contact dried up altogether\u201d in the weeks and months after the initial grieving process.<\/p>\n \u201cI was on my own. We had always been so social; we\u2019d always had people round,\u201d Roy recalled of his \u201c32 happy years\u201d\u00a0together with his beloved wife. \u201cIt made me realise that Sandra and I had always been \u2018givers,\u2019 but a lot of people who were our friends were \u2018takers.\u2019 When I had nothing to give, they were no longer interested in engaging with me.\u201d<\/p>\n Roy went on to describe some of the lonely times after Sandra\u2019s death.<\/p>\n \u201cI stopped going to the pub then, preferring to drink at home with my records. I enjoy my model railway, I watch a lot of TV, and try to keep abreast of current affairs, but it can be quite isolating,\u201d he admitted. \u201cWhile I occasionally reached out to some of the couples we\u2019d have over for dinner, I\u2019ve lost contact with some of them, or they\u2019ve passed away. The friends we met abroad never came to the U.K., so we lost touch.\u201d<\/p>\n Then, in 2022, his 44-year-old son, Robert, died of bronchial pneumonia.<\/p>\n Over the years, Roy has also made new friends by doing what he, his wife and their son used to love doing together as a family: traveling.<\/p>\n \u201cWhile I always enjoyed it with Sandra, I\u2019ve gotten used to doing it alone. I go on around four cruises a year when I\u2019m well enough, and that helps me to meet new people, see new things and keep my mind fresh,\u201d Roy said.<\/p>\n
