Take Glen Powell. A year ago, the <em>Twisters<\/em> and <em>Anyone but You<\/em> star was being talked about as possibly the next<br \/>Tom Cruise. But he \u201cstumbled badly\u201d when he tried to play a macho action hero in November\u2019s remake of <em>The Running Man<\/em>, and he\u2019s now turned in a second straight box office flop. He took a risk with <em>How to Make a Killing<\/em>, playing a guy cheated by fate who we\u2019re supposed to root for as he begins murdering off the seven rich relatives standing between him and an enormous inheritance. But c\u2019mon. \u201cPowell is charming, but he\u2019s not <em>that<\/em> charming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The movie \u201cneeded to pick a side,\u201d said <strong>Jacob Oller<\/strong> in <em><strong>AV Club<\/strong><\/em>. It could have been \u201ca clownish class comedy\u201d or \u201cbitter sociopathic satire,\u201d but it winds up being neither, and \u201cat the center of it all is Powell, making the<br \/>same face for an hour and 45 minutes, too unflappable to root for, too smug to magnetize as an inhuman American Psycho.\u201d I\u2019m not ready to give up on him, said <strong>Nick Schager<\/strong> in the <em><strong>Daily Beast<\/strong><\/em>. To me, he and co-star Margaret Qualley, who plays the femme fatale who eggs on the killing spree, come across as \u201csuch alluringly nasty delights\u201d that this reworking of the 1949 black comedy <em>Kind Hearts and Coronets<\/em> \u201c survives its potentially lethal missteps and works on its own limited terms.\u201d Though its teeth aren\u2019t as sharp as they should be, \u201cit\u2019s smart and spiky enough to leave a pleasurably painful mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">\u2018Pillion\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>Directed by Harry Lighton (Not rated)<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2605\u2605\u2605\u2605<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While this gay BDSM rom-com from a rookie director \u201cmight sound niche,\u201d said <strong>Amy Nicholson<\/strong> in the <em><strong>Los Angeles Times<\/strong><\/em>, \u201cfree yourself to see it and you\u2019ll discover it\u2019s a universal romance.\u201d Former <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/jk-rowlings-transphobia-controversy-complete-201506555.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Harry Potter;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\"><em>Harry Potter<\/em><\/a> side figure Harry Melling stars as a shy singleton who\u2019s figuring out what he wants in a relationship when he happens into a submissive-dominant entanglement with a tall, handsome biker played by Alexander Skarsgard. Soon, Melling\u2019s Colin is obeying his lover\u2019s every order, including by shaving himself bald and sleeping like a dog on the floor. But the \u201ckinky-funny\u201d screenplay, which won a prize at Cannes, makes sure we see that Colin is not stuck but growing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While the movie\u2019s sex scenes are \u201crefreshingly graphic,\u201d they\u2019re \u201cnever used or shock value,\u201d said <strong>Odie Henderson<\/strong> in <em><strong>The Boston Globe<\/strong><\/em>. \u201cThe real shock comes from how emotionally involved the characters become within the construct of their kink.\u201d And when Colin brings his new lover<br \/>home to meet the parents, Skarsgard and Lesley Sharp, as Colin\u2019s suburban <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/first-timers-guide-londons-neighborhoods-070000853.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:London;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">London<\/a> mom, do memorable work because \u201cneither of them<br \/>approaches the scene in a way you\u2019d expect.\u201d Until the ending, which \u201cfeels a little neat,\u201d said <strong>Zachary Barnes<\/strong> in<em><strong> The Wall Street Journal<\/strong><\/em>, the movie \u201cproceeds with an assurance of tone that\u2019s especially impressive for a first-time filmmaker handling material like this.\u201d Harry Lighton\u2019s debut \u201ccould have been simply shocking, revving its engine in sexed-up style. Instead, <em>Pillion<\/em> purrs.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">\u2018Midwinter Break\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>Directed by Polly Findlay (PG-13)<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2605\u2605<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Lesley Manville and Ciar\u00e1n Hinds \u201cwould be appealing to watch just fumbling for their reading glasses,\u201d said <strong>Natalia Winkelman<\/strong> in <em><strong>The New York Times<\/strong><\/em>. Unfortunately, this \u201cstaid\u201d drama about an aging Irish couple puts that claim to the test. A \u201cslow-moving film with a sappy score and mellow mood,\u201d <em>Midwinter Break <\/em>opens with Manville\u2019s Stella surprising Hinds\u2019 Gerry by arranging a spur-of-the-moment trip to Amsterdam. Alas, \u201cprecious little conflict occurs until long afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But while Polly Findlay\u2019s adaptation of a Bernard MacLaverty novel is a \u201cdelicate\u201d film, said <strong>Lindsey Bahr<\/strong> in the <em><strong>Associated Press<\/strong><\/em>, its impact can be profound \u201cif you can get on its level.\u201d Stella, a devout Catholic, has an ulterior motive for dragging Gerry abroad, and when she nervously proposes how she\u2019d like to live more purposefully in retirement, \u201cit feels earth-shattering.\u201d This is a couple accustomed to leaving much unsaid,<br \/>including how the violence of the Troubles led them to flee Belfast years earlier for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/scottish-hospitality-shines-7-hotels-060000106.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Scotland;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">Scotland<\/a>. Manville and Hinds give the movie everything they\u2019ve got, said <strong>Caryn James<\/strong> in <em><strong>The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/em>.
