, inspired by a solo backpacking trip to Ruby Mountain in Washington State.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nFollowing the release of <\/span>Cascades, <\/span><\/i>Glass hit the ground running and began recording his most recent release, a seven-track record called <\/span>Ballad of the Great Horned One.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\nThese compositions were meant to build upon what he accomplished on his first EP, incorporating some additional influences ranging from progressive rock, post-rock and black metal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cI wanted to create something that was a bit more melody-driven, stronger and commanding,\u201d Glass told Victoria Buzz. \u201cSomething with a bit more meat to dig into.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\nHe added that he feels where on <\/span>Cascades, <\/span><\/i>he got to create nice, pretty sounding compositions, on <\/span>Ballad of the Great Horned One <\/span><\/i>he got to lean into darker, more dissonant themes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nWhere <\/span>Cascades <\/span><\/i>was a concept album about one specific place in time, this album was inspired by the Pacific Northwest, the deserts of Utah and the works of Cormac McCarthy and Haruki Murakami.<\/span><\/p>\n\u201c\u2018At the Bottom of a Well\u2019 was a really textural song I wrote with three acts to it, and it\u2019s based off of the Murakami novel, <\/span>The Wind Up Bird Chronicle,\u201d <\/span><\/i>he explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cIts about this character who goes to a different dimension, so the first act is this chord progression, then there\u2019s this transition piece and the third act is actually the same chord progression as the first part\u2014just played in reverse order, with reverse delay.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\nHighlight song \u2013 \u201cBallad of the Great Horned One\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n
The title track of his new album is a song with special meaning to Glass.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cBallad of the Great Horned One\u201d was written while Glass was making weekly trips up to Nanaimo for work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nHis day job required him to make the trek up island every week for two days, which allowed Glass to have a lot of free time on his hands as he opted to camp out near town for those days as a way to connect with nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cIt\u2019s an homage to the time I spent in Nanaimo, when I used to camp out there and there were a ton of great horned owls that would keep me up at night,\u201d said Glass.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cIt\u2019s weird, juxtaposed with being away from home for work can be lame\u2014unless you\u2019re into living out of your car\u2014but you\u2019re surrounded by beauty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\nHe added that often, he would get off of work and just play guitar in nature, taking notice of how surroundings change through the seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cIt\u2019s soul nourishing in a lot of ways, being close to stuff like that,\u201d he explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cIn the winter there are a ton of owls and in different seasons there can be a ton of frogs and they all keep you up at all hours, but that song is an homage to that time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\u201cThe first time you hear an owl is crazy, and then there\u2019s a whole chorus of them, it\u2019s great, but then it goes until 2 a.m. and it\u2019s not so cool anymore,\u201d he laughed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nIt was there, camping in Nanaimo with his guitar and a stool to sit on that Glass wrote most of this newly-released record.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nListen to Ballad of the \u201cGreat Horned One\u201d below:<\/span><\/p>\n
