Bell to those roles. He will take over on 6 July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Basseches had been at the helm of the downtown Toronto museum <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2025\/06\/06\/royal-ontario-museum-leader-stepping-down-josh-basseches\">for a decade<\/a>, while Bell most recently served as president and chief executive at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta, a post he had held since 2019\u2014his efforts there were hardly unnoticed. That was touched upon by the ROM\u2019s board of trustees in making the announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cNever has the value of major Canadian cultural institutions like ROM been more apparent or relevant,\u201d Andrew MacLeod, the chair of the board, said in a statement. \u201cAs a museum leader, Nicholas has successfully nurtured broad stakeholder relationships, developed diverse curatorial programmes, managed significant capital projects and driven attendance results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Bell had high praise for the Toronto museum in accepting the position. \u201cI am honoured and humbled to join the exceptional team at ROM,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cWe need museums now, more than ever, to help adapt to our changing world and planet. Indigenous community engagement as well as reconciliation were top priorities during his time at Glenbow, which was Canada\u2019s first major museum to offer free general admission for all. With the cost of admission to cultural institutions always on the rise, that surely appeals to Calgarians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Prior to Glenbow, Bell served as\u202fthe senior vice-president of the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut, and at the Smithsonian American Art Museum\u2019s Renwick Gallery in Washington, DC. He is the author or editor of 11 books on art, culture and museums, among them 2015\u2019s <em class=\"italic\">Wonder<\/em>, with Lawrence Weschler contributing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">He will have his hands full at the ROM, the most visited museum in Canada\u2014and, with more than 1.1 million visitors in 2024 according to <em class=\"italic\">The Art Newspaper<\/em>\u2019s most recent <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2025\/04\/01\/the-worlds-most-visited-museums-2024-\">survey of attendance figures<\/a>, the 74th-most-visited in the world. According to the museum\u2019s announcement, his job will include oversight of the institution\u2019s operations, finances and capital projects, including the <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2024\/02\/14\/torontos-royal-ontario-museum-announces-renovation-project\">C$130m ($96m) OpenROM project<\/a>.
