May Van Alen House, a Victorian brownstone on the Upper East Side, once belonged to one of New York\u2019s most pampered bachelorettes. Today, it\u2019s been decked out for a different kind of pampered socialite. One wall has a gold-rimmed frame with a photo of Lil Uzi Vert<\/a> dolled up like an 18th-century aristocrat. Upstairs, a bed is strewn with white towels shaped into swans and dollar bills bearing Uzi\u2019s face.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The rapper comes barrelling in with a speaker blasting 2slimey\u2019s High Anxiety, a rage tape so serrated it hits like a dagger sawing through your ear canal. For the first shot, they stand atop the dining room table, clasping a chandelier. Uzi\u2019s dreads are split black and pink; a massive vertical gold necklace that spells out \u201cMUSEUM\u201d hangs over a cinched Dior Bar jacket and pair of white trousers so unbelievably wide they would even turn heads in Ridgewood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a weird 12 months for Uzi, who didn\u2019t sit for a single written interview in 2025. They\u2019re easily one of the most charismatic MCs alive and the most talented vocalist of the original SoundCloud set, someone who can stretch simple phrases like an accordion. Halfway through the decade, Uzi remains immensely popular, and there\u2019s a strong chance of a new album this spring. But they now have to fend off an increasingly inventive underground scene and an impatient fanbase which has leaked more than a thousand unreleased songs this year alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You never know what Uzi is going to say. This kind of dizzy unpredictability has propelled their career\u2013you can see it in their outfits, the constant edging of fans with the promise of new music, and their freakish collaborations. (Who else has worked with Nicki Minaj<\/a>, Snow Strippers<\/a>, Bring Me the Horizon and the Nickelodeon boyband Big Time Rush?) Here, they discuss death, new music and their dream of spearheading a steampunk revival.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>2slimey took the end of 2025. I can\u2019t even think about nobody else.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I liked your three recent songs <\/strong>[Chanel Boy, Relevant and Regular].\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>I have another one coming out, too. I should drop that shit <\/span>[What You Saying]<\/span><\/em> after this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Are you in a posting mode right now, or a creative spurt?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>Yeah, I thought about it. I was being selfish for a long time, holding my music and shit. I\u2019m like, \u2018What if I just wake up and die? Who\u2019s gonna drop my music for me if I\u2019m dead?\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n

Do you worry about that a lot? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>A<\/span>bout dying? Nah, I don\u2019t worry about dying at all. But I\u2019ll say that what I really do worry about is being the last person on Earth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Like that movie, <\/strong>I Am Legend?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>Well, he technically wasn\u2019t the last person on Earth. They was just mutated. I don\u2019t know\u2026 Like, what if I\u2019m really supposed to be the last person on Earth? What if everyone dies? What if this room doesn\u2019t exist and I\u2019m still alive? That\u2019s bad.<\/span><\/p>\n

Are these singles part of a bigger world you\u2019re trying to build or a project coming out?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>Nah, the singles is for the streets. You gotta understand, I got so many flows. My fans don\u2019t really appreciate when I make a big mainstream song. They say, \u2018Well, we want a trapped-out Uzi.\u2019 Then I make a trap song and they say, \u2018Uzi, you know better than this, you make quality music, we can\u2019t even hear it.\u201d So instead of meeting those people in the middle, I make two different genres of music\u2026 I have my real drops that I usually drop on holidays or I have a countdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you have an album coming out in 2026?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was curious to know if you feel pressure; so many people in underground rap feel pressure to drop frequently.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>I don\u2019t feel pressure, bro. I\u2019m gonna tell you right now: everybody that don\u2019t pay attention to me, [they] got they life going on. Everybody that pay attention to me [too much], it\u2019s somehow coded that I\u2019m better than you. They be trying to make it like we supposed to drop one album a year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What kinds of sounds are you interested in exploring?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert:<\/strong>\u00a0I\u2019m trying to see what they listening to in Indonesia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What got you into Indonesia?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>Huh? It was just the first place I thought of right now. Yeah, I wouldn\u2019t lie to you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you have any dream visuals for your next album?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>I gotta change the scene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How are you gonna change the scene?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>I can think of it right now, that\u2019s how good I am. Steampunk. <\/span>Steampunk<\/span><\/em>. Because everything\u2019s too goth, so we\u2019re gonna make it more steampunk.<\/span><\/p>\n

Are you going to spend the holidays with your family?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>Probably not. I\u2019m not that type of person. I\u2019m like Scrooge. But I make sure all of them are really well taken care of.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But will you be with JT<\/a> [Lil Uzi\u2019s girlfriend and former City Girls rapper]?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>Yeah, well we got our own family. Me, JT and Baby Skrill. We got a Xolo dog, he\u2019s naked.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She be like, \u2018Put on some music, I wanna hear what you been working on,\u2019 and I be nervous. I just be like, \u2018Bro, why you always wanna hear my music? Play your own music!\u2019 And then we\u2019ll go to dinner, chill out and talk about things we can change in each other\u2019s lives and stuff. I be bipping, though. I be out here living my days at a time. But I\u2019m very JT-coded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You got a baby Baby Pluto [Uzi\u2019s alter ego, inspired by Future\u2019s nickname] coming?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>No, she don\u2019t want my baby to be a Baby Pluto. Hell no. She said she want our kid to like tennis, all that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>Play with my dog and my girlfriend records me. We probably argue about something stupid real quick then I act like I\u2019m about to leave, and she chasing me and then we chilling.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lil Uzi Vert: <\/strong>Probably Ryan Sheckler and Rob Dyrdek. I like the skaters that all skaters hate, because it\u2019s more up my alley. I like the rich skaters, not the broke ones. I like Lizard King, though. Shoutout Bam, too \u2013 that\u2019s why I got the purple Lam outside. I wanna be like Bam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
