Bruce Campbell, \u201cThe Evil Dead\u201d actor who is a staple at fan conventions, says he will be taking his foot off the gas for a while as he gets treatment for an unspecified cancer. <\/p>\n

\u201c[T]hese days, when someone is having a health issue, it\u2019s referred to as an \u2018opportunity,\u2019 so let\u2019s go with that \u2014 I\u2019m having one of those. It\u2019s also called a type of cancer that\u2019s \u2018treatable\u2019 not \u2018curable.\u2019 I apologize if that\u2019s a shock \u2014 it was to me too,\u201d the 67-year-old said Monday on social media<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe good news is, I\u2019m not gonna go into any more detail.\u201d<\/p>\n

What he did go into a little more detail about was his plan to accommodate treatment, which involves cutting out \u201cappearances and cons and work in general\u201d while he gets the care he needs. Campbell said he has \u201cbig regrets\u201d over canceling several con appearances over the summer but noted, \u201cTreatment needs and professional obligations don\u2019t always go hand-in-hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said his plan is to get \u201cas well as I possibly can\u201d over the summer so he can promote his new movie \u201cErnie & Emma\u201d this fall. The movie \u2014 which he wrote, directed and stars in \u2014 follows a widower as he scatters his wife\u2019s ashes in very specific locations and deals with the memories that arise at each of them. <\/p>\n

Campbell\u2019s place in the world of fandoms was cemented early on after he and buddy Sam Raimi partnered on the 1981 movie \u201cThe Evil Dead,\u201d which saw Campbell playing Ashley \u201cAsh\u201d J. Williams and Raimi directing. <\/p>\n

After teaming on two more movies in \u201cThe Evil Dead\u201d universe, Campbell, Raimi and brother Ivan Raimi delivered the TV series \u201cAsh vs. Evil Dead,\u201d<\/a> which aired for three seasons on Starz, from 2015 into 2018.<\/p>\n

Campbell also co-starred in the USA Network series \u201cBurn Notice,\u201d playing Sam Axe, a former Navy SEAL and burned spy who hangs out with the series\u2019 lead character Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan), a spy who as the series begins gets a \u201cburn notice\u201d of his own. That one ran from 2007 to 2013. <\/p>\n

Cutting to the present, Sam Raimi\u2019s daughter Emma appears as the character Tatyana in Campbell\u2019s \u201cErnie & Emma,\u201d as does another Raimi brother, Ted. <\/p>\n

Campbell wrote Monday afternoon, \u201cI\u2019m not trying to enlist sympathy \u2014 or advice \u2014 I just want to get ahead of this information in case false information gets out (which it will).<\/p>\n

\u201cFear not,\u201d he added, \u201cI am a tough old son-of-a-bitch and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he thanked \u201cthe greatest fans in the world\u201d and said he hoped to see them soon. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
