Lucy Liyou<\/a>, the California-based ambient musician and sound artist, is back with new music. She\u2019s turning her semi-autobiographical theatrical work Mister Cobra<\/em><\/a>, which debuts at Performance Space New York on March 28, into a proper album; Mr Cobra<\/em><\/a> is out April 17 via Orange Milk<\/a>. Check out two new songs from the record, \u201cYoohoo (An Overture)\u201d and \u201cBabygirl,\u201d below.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor Mr Cobra<\/em>, I wanted to give myself the agency to distort all truths to see what jumped out to me as truthful in a reactive, and sometimes illusionary or misleading, sense\u2013in all of this faulty rawness,\u201d explained Liyou. \u201cI was really drawn to sounds and images that felt satisfyingly \u2018false\u2019\u2013I was drawn to Cecil Taylor\u2019s Unit Structures<\/em>, my favorite drag queens in Los Angeles who magically bombed every Monday, Ryan Trecartin\u2019s A Family Finds Entertainment<\/em>, Sunik Kim\u2019s Potential<\/em>, and so much more. I wanted frenzy that felt disembodying\u2013so disembodying that this time of my life could conjure a laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Cobra<\/em> follows Liyou\u2019s 2025 album Every Video Without Your Face, Every Sound Without Your Name<\/em><\/a>, and was written, recorded, and produced by Liyou herself. She describes Mr Cobra<\/em> as a revisionist retelling of a period in high school during which she \u201cfell in love with a predator.\u201d Over its 12-song tracklist, the album works through varying forms of shame, including anger, disappointment, and dark humor. \u201cI want people to laugh at me and with me,\u201d she said in a press release, \u201cto make this moment in my life feel like a gross, important, and unimportant spectacle.\u201d<\/p>\n
