Meghan McCain<\/strong><\/a> is walking back her support of legislation legalizing marijuana more than a decade after she publicly talked about its economic benefits.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never would have supported the legalization of marijuana had I known what would end up happening to young people and our cities,\u201d McCain, 41, wrote via X<\/a> on Wednesday, March 4. \u201cI deeply regret it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She claimed, \u201cEvery major city and uber in them just reeks of weeds [sic] everywhere. It is absolutely vile.\u201d<\/p>\n

McCain didn\u2019t expand on what effects marijuana has allegedly had on the country\u2019s \u201cyoung people.\u201d However, America\u2019s Poison Centers reported via a New York Times<\/em><\/a> article published in August 2025 that the number of cannabis-related incidents reported to poison control centers had increased from \u201cabout 930 cases in 2009 to more than 22,000\u201d over the year prior.<\/p>\n

McCain\u2019s statement, meanwhile, comes more than 10 years after she voiced her support for the legalization of the drug\u00a0in her 2012 book America You Sexy Bitch<\/em>, cowritten with comedian Michael Ian Black<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I come out for legalizing marijuana in this book,\u201d McCain told Jay Leno<\/strong> on the Tonight Show<\/em><\/a> in 2012, confirming she did smoke weed<\/a> in New Orleans while touring HBO\u2019s Treme<\/em> and doing research for the book.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was living in Los Angeles very briefly last year and I was shocked at how people here smoke weed the way people in New York pour wine,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce I started doing research on the economic benefits for our country by decriminalizing marijuana decided to come out publicly and support it,\u201d McCain concluded.<\/p>\n

Following her father, Senator John McCain<\/strong>\u2019s death in 2018<\/a>, Meghan opened up about how she thought cannabis treatment could have extended his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to tell you what you\u2019re doing with this is really important,\u201d Meghan told Ricki Lake<\/strong> during a March 2019 episode of The View<\/em><\/a> as Lake, 57, spoke about producing the documentary Weed the People<\/em><\/a> about families seeking medical marijuana for children with cancer.<\/p>\n
