Harry Styles<\/a> reflected on his One Direction bandmate Liam Payne\u2019s 2024 death in a recent interview, saying it was \u201cstrange\u201d for people to \u201cown\u201d part of his grief.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with acknowledging how strange it is to have people own part of your grief in a way,\u201d Styles told Zane Lowe in an Apple Music interview released Wednesday. \u201cI have such strong feelings around my friend passing away, and then suddenly being made aware of there\u2019s maybe a desire from other people for you to convey that in some way or it means you\u2019re not feeling what you\u2019re feeling or something.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n In the interview with Lowe, Styles, whose new album \u201cKiss All The Time. Disco Occasionally\u201d comes out Friday, had been speaking about what being an artist means to him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI think that makes someone an artist is letting them watch you be an ordinary person. It\u2019s not about being \u2018I am this mystic thing,\u2019\u201d Styles said. \u201cI think the difference is we\u2019re all ordinary people and there\u2019s some people who let other people watch you be an ordinary person.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Lowe then said he thought of Payne when Styles said that: \u201cPeople who struggle to get out of extraordinary situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Styles then said, \u201cfull transparency,\u201d that he struggled with just the idea of talking about Payne\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Payne, who was one-fifth of the boy band One Direction, died in October 2024 at age 31 after falling off a Buenos Aires hotel balcony. An autopsy report<\/a> found he had alcohol, cocaine and prescription antidepressants in his system. All four of Payne\u2019s One Direction bandmates, including Styles, attended Payne\u2019s funeral<\/a> in England. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Styles\u2019 interview with Lowe is the first time the singer has publicly spoken about Payne\u2019s death. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cIt\u2019s so difficult to lose a friend,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s difficult to lose any friend, but it\u2019s so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways. I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The singer said Payne\u2019s death made him take a look at his own life and ask himself how he wanted to live it. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI think the greatest way you can honor your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest,\u201d Styles said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n He said Payne was a \u201csuper special person.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Styles also opened up about winning the 2023 Grammy Album of the Year for \u201cHarry\u2019s House.\u201d He said he wrote himself a letter the night before to open after the Grammys, whether he had won or not, to \u201ccatch\u201d himself, whether he was disappointed for \u201cfeeling\u201d himself \u201ca little too much.\u201d He paraphrased the letter, saying it said, \u201cWhatever everyone just told you, it\u2019s not true. Remember why you made it. That is the reward.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
