At the end of \u201cParanoia Purple,\u201d a voice note played: \u201cHope you\u2019re having fun, and I hope you\u2019re singing away.\u201d Yebba puts these words into practice on <em>Jean<\/em>, her first LP in five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cSay, what if I forgave it all\/I\u2019d be the laughing stock of every guard at every wall\/But what if I let the river through\/And whatever else just might belong to you,\u201d she sings on the opening track, \u201cForgiveness.\u201d It\u2019s a quiet prayer delivered in a tender tone over a delicate piano melody. Leaning into faith over fear, the 31-year-old starts to learn how to let go. In some moments, it\u2019s easier said than done. She calls back to \u201cForgiveness\u201d as she approaches the end of the album with \u201cSeven Years.\u201d The refrain \u201cMaybe that\u2019s how forgiveness feels\u201d returns, only this time there\u2019s an added weight of uncertainty. \u201cSeven years of rage\/Did I lose my mind?\u201d she sings. \u201cTears strike the page\/Will I waste my life?\u201d Yebba wants to know if it\u2019s possible to keep anchors in the past, but also move forward without being weighed down by them. She spent some time there while making this album, and made note of the cyclical routines that the lives there have followed for as long as she can remember. \u201cIt was TBN and praise the Lord\/Then Powerball was on by four,\u201d she sings. \u201cGranny said to trust the Lord\/He\u2019ll heal the sick and settle every score.\u2019\u201d But in her assessments of what stayed the same, Yebba notices that she really hasn\u2019t at all. She\u2019s older, but not entirely wiser, which she seems to embrace \u2014 the idea that there\u2019s always more to learn and experience is a source of excitement, rather than alarm. The hazy, synth-filled \u201cDelicate Roots\u201d feels similarly designed for closed-eyes listening. There\u2019s nothing else to do but give into the aching feeling she evokes. Most of the album ventures beyond the R&amp;B pockets Yebba usually resides in. Still, her gospel influences remain intact, like on the amorous \u201cWaterfall (I Adore You),\u201d which first arrived in 2023 after being sampled on \u201cPolar Opposites\u201d from the Drake album <em>For All the Dogs. <\/em>There\u2019s a recurring lyrical theme about change and distinction that might have informed her yearning for exploration. She\u2019s always \u201csinging away,\u201d but she fulfills the \u201chaving fun\u201d element of that parting wish from <em>Dawn<\/em> when she tries on new approaches to the way she molds her voice around her words.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cAggressive\u201d is a rock song about all-consuming want and desire. Her emotion is mirrored by raging guitars that fight to overtake her voice and nearly win. Yebba mellows out on \u201cEarth, Wind, &amp; California,\u201d though only in the sense that her assessment of rapid trend cycles and the music industry (\u201cThe real ones are gone\/Prolonging death\/To suck dick for the man\/That only makes us come\/To meetings\/About meetings\/We\u2019re fucked\u201d) is set against a breezy surf-rock backdrop. \u201cOf Course,\u201d the album\u2019s skittering mid-point, distorts Yebba\u2019s pristine vocals through glitching hyper-pop verses.
