While some critics like <em data-node-id=\"0.5\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/the-bride-review\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.avclub.com\/the-bride-review\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"The AV Club\u2019s\" data-node-id=\"0.5.0\" class=\"body-link css-jpo0au emevuu60\">The AV Club\u2019s<\/a><\/em> Luke Hicks called it a \u201cbold, beautiful, feminist freakout,\u201d <em data-node-id=\"0.7\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/04\/entertainment\/the-bride-review-jessie-buckleys-latest-is-one-of-the-worst-movies-ive-seen-in-this-job\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/04\/entertainment\/the-bride-review-jessie-buckleys-latest-is-one-of-the-worst-movies-ive-seen-in-this-job\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"The New York Post\u2019\" data-node-id=\"0.7.0\" class=\"body-link css-jpo0au emevuu60\">The celebrity.land\u2019<\/a><\/em>s Johnny Oleksinski wrote that it was \u201cone of the worst movies I\u2019ve seen in his job.\u201d What gives?<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"><em data-node-id=\"1.0\">The Bride! <\/em>draws inspiration from the original 1935 film <em data-node-id=\"1.2\">Bride of Frankenstein<\/em>, wherein the monster asks Dr. Frankenstein\u2019s mentor to repeat the famous experiment and create a female companion for him. Gyllenhaal\u2019s film, which loosely follows the plot of the 1935 film, setting the story in 1930s Chicago. The new film paints Frankenstein and his Bride, Ida, as a sort of <em data-node-id=\"1.4\">Bonnie &amp; Clyde <\/em>crime couple, with Gyllenhaal stressing on press tours that she sought to reinterpret the Gothic story from the Bride\u2019s point of view. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cI just had this fantasy,\u201d Gyllenhaal told <em data-node-id=\"2.1\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2026-03-01\/maggie-gyllenhaal-bride-pam-abdy-warner-bros-jessie-buckley-interview\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2026-03-01\/maggie-gyllenhaal-bride-pam-abdy-warner-bros-jessie-buckley-interview\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"The LA Times\" data-node-id=\"2.1.0\" class=\"body-link css-jpo0au emevuu60\">The LA Times<\/a><\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m not speaking for Mary Shelley, but there must have been some other, naughtier, wilder, more dangerous things that Mary Shelley wanted to say that weren\u2019t said in <em data-node-id=\"2.3\">Frankenstein<\/em>. I\u2019d way rather see twenty <em data-node-id=\"12.1\">The Bride!<\/em>\u2019s swing and miss then another twenty <em data-node-id=\"12.3\">Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Slops<\/em>. Betting on big auteurs to make a fool of themselves on screen is what this business is all about, no?
