Over the past five years, Green has gotten married, and he and his wife are parents to two sons, and are expecting a daughter this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cLike every record I\u2019ve done, this record is a biography, but it doesn\u2019t have breakup songs or first-love songs, because that\u2019s not where I\u2019m at,\u201d he tells <em>Billboard<\/em>. \u201cThe biggest hurdle to get over when I started writing for this record, was that I had been writing breakup songs and the formula that\u2019s worked in the past for me. But I couldn\u2019t connect to that. My mom always said, \u2018Follow your heart and\u00a0you\u2019ll never go wrong,\u2019 so I just wrote what I know. My fanbase has grown with me and we\u2019re all going through the same stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat\u2019s not the only marked difference on the new album. He began working with producer Logan Wall, and used all studio musicians on the album, working in top-flight Nashville with musicians including Rob McNelley, Sam Hunter, Lex Price and Bryan Sutton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhen you have guys that talented, it\u2019s like having six producers in the room. I was learning from them,\u201d Green says. \u201cIt was a cool experience and I definitely wasn\u2019t used to the 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. I\u2019m used to the 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., get a bottle of whiskey out and try new things. So that was the only thing that was a bit weird for me was just the timecard, definitely different on Music Row and the way they do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGreen\u2019s growing family inspired him to write the tender \u201cWhere the Wild Things Are,\u201d which he says was initially going to be the album\u2019s title track. But when a different song with the same title released soon after, Green debated on whether to record his song.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhen I found out we were having a boy, I thought, \u201cThe next record is going to be called \u2018Where the Wild Things Are.\u2019 That was my favorite book growing up. I wrote the song with the guys from A Thousand Horses. Before I flew to Nashville to write the song, I texted [A Thousand Horses guitarist] Billy and said, \u2018This is the song I want to write tomorrow.\u2019 It turned out, when I sent that, he was reading that book to his son. We wrote the song and we were really proud of it. Then two months later, Luke Combs out with his song, also called \u2018Where The Wild Things Are.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAnd that just happens in this business, it\u2019s coincidence ,\u201d he continues. \u201cWriters will be going through the same part of life at the same time. But that happened, and I was like, \u2018I can\u2019t release this.\u2019 But then my Dad passed away and after his funeral, I listened to our song a bunch and thought, \u2018It\u2019d be a shame if I had this, a gift to my kids, and they weren\u2019t able to hear it because I was too afraid of being called a \u201ccopy\u201d or whatever.\u2019 I released it and haven\u2019t had any backlash from it. They are two completely separate songs. I\u2019m so proud of the song and the production on it and it means a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tElsewhere, multiple songs on the album, such as \u201cHawks Don\u2019t Fly With Chickens\u201d and the stunner \u201cStubborn and Remains,\u201d nod to resilience and commitment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cTravis Meadows, man, what a brilliant f\u2013king songwriter,\u201d Green says of Meadows, his co-writer on \u201cStubborn and Remains,\u201d along with Wall. \u201cI\u2019m a fan of his solo stuff, too. [Meadows\u2019 2011] <em>Killin\u2019 Uncle Buzzy <\/em>record is phenomenal. When I write with him, I really just shut up and listen. He had the title, we wrote the chorus first and went from there. After the write, he was so excited, and was like, \u2018This is a big song.\u2019 He just felt it. It\u2019s maybe my favorite song on the record. I think it\u2019s a blue-collar song. And it\u2019s about commitment, not boastful or braggish, just honest and true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOf course, that\u2019s not to say that this album\u2019s songs are all completely somber narratives and profound reflections. The album ends with the golf-centered \u201cDrinkin\u2019 and Drivin,\u2019\u201d for which Green also spent a day on a golf course to shoot the song\u2019s hilarious video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt was a fun day. We weren\u2019t acting, but we were definitely drinking,\u201d Green says of the video shoot. \u201cWhen we wrote the song, I had played golf a few weeks before at a course in Fort Worth and a guy recognized me. He walked up to me \u2014 didn\u2019t say hello or anything, just said, \u2018I come out here every week, and no songwriter\u2019s ever written a song about golf,\u2019 and he walked away. I told my buddy about it, and he said, \u2018You know, he\u2019s right.\u2019 I get in the writing room and Jack [Rauton] had the title \u2018Drinkin\u2019 and Drivin\u2019,\u2019 and I thought that was the perfect title. Not everything has to be so serious all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOne thing he does take seriously is his dedication to having creative control of his music. He\u2019s recorded each of his albums independently, with the bulk of them released under his indie label Bill Grease Records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe plan has always been to be independent,\u201d Green says. \u201cI\u2019m very content with what I\u2019ve created and where my career is. I would never sign a record deal that wouldn\u2019t give me creative control. I would never sign a record deal that would take a percentage of my touring that I\u2019ve built. Why would I do that? So I just don\u2019t see how, business-wise, it would make sense for a label.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLike Green, artists and groups forged and rooted in the Texas country scene have seen career surges in the past few years, such as Treaty Oak Revival. Green co-wrote and was featured on the title track to that group\u2019s 2025 album <em>West Texas Degenerate<\/em>, but their friendship stretches back for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s been fun to watch with Treaty Oak,\u201d Green says. \u201cI have the music festival in Lubbock called Cotton Fest, and they were fans in the front row in like 2018, 2019. They went every year, and then ended up d\u2014n near headlining it in 2022 or 2023, and now we can\u2019t afford them. I think that\u2019s amazing. Their music is incredible and they are the real deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThis year, he will launch a headlining Spring tour in support of his new album, and is opening shows on Treaty Oak Revival\u2019s West Texas Degenerate Tour. Similar to his approach to making <em>Watterson Hall<\/em>, Green is approaching touring in a way that honors both his career and his personal life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe last five years, I\u2019ve kept it under 90 shows per year, which is manageable for me and my family. But it\u2019s all opportunity-based,\u201d he says. \u201cI was planning to take April and May off for our daughter, but then we had the opportunity to go on the road with Treaty Oak Revival, and I can\u2019t say no. Around 90 shows is about as hard as I want to push it.\u00a0The band\u2019s all on salary and that keeps everybody in good shape. This is my 18th year of touring. I\u2019ve done 160 days a year and dedicated the majority of my younger life to that. My son\u2019s starting t-ball, and I don\u2019t want to be a musician that misses his kids growing up.
