Mary Cosby<\/b><\/a>\u2019s troubled son, Robert Cosby Jr<\/b><\/a>., faced several highs and lows due to his drug addiction before his life came to an end at age 23.<\/p>\n

Robert Jr. bravely opened up to his famous mom, 53, about his struggles during an emotional heart-to-heart, which was filmed for season 5 of Bravo\u2019s The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City<\/i><\/a>. During that conversation, Robert Jr. admitted to mixing Xanax with several different drugs, including cocaine.<\/p>\n

Last month, R<\/a>obert<\/a> Jr. was<\/a> found<\/a> dead<\/a> at his parents\u2019 Utah home from a suspected overdose.<\/p>\n

Robert Cosby Jr. Was Arrested for DUI in 2022<\/h2>\n

Robert Jr.\u2019s first official run-in with the law was in 2022 when he was arrested for a DUI. According to law enforcement, he was allegedly operating a vehicle without a license and disobeyed traffic laws.<\/p>\n

Mary\u2019s son pleaded guilty to the DUI in exchange for the other charges being dropped.<\/p>\n

Police Speak to Mary About Alleged Hit-and-Run in 2022<\/b><\/h2>\n

A police report obtained by Us<\/i> shows that a Salt Lake City officer went to Mary and her husband Robert Sr<\/strong>.\u2019s home in August 2022 after witnessing a vehicle, which was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run, enter their garage.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile trying to figure out what the address was with dispatch, the vehicle they were looking for drove past me. I attempted to turn around to pull it over but the vehicle quickly pulled into [Mary and Robert Sr.\u2019s address] in the far left garage of the address and closed the garage door,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n

When questioning Mary about who was driving the car, she allegedly told the officer she didn\u2019t know and claimed the vehicle \u201chasn\u2019t been driven in forever.\u201d After the cop shared that he \u201cjust watched it pull in,\u201d he claimed she \u201crefused to give me any information.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mary also reportedly accused the officer of racial profiling, saying things like, \u201cDon\u2019t discredit our race\u201d and \u201cdon\u2019t discredit the fact that you guys don\u2019t care about lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report stated that during their conversation, Mary had Robert Sr. on speakerphone, and he allegedly told the officer, \u201cBe glad I\u2019m not there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHer husband on the phone also stated that he does not like cops,\u201d the report continued, adding that Mary accused law enforcement officers of not liking them because \u201cwe are African American.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the document, Mary refused to give Salt Lake City police officers her information and instructed them to tell Cottonwood Heights Police Department \u2014 which was investigating the alleged hit-and-run \u2014\u00a0to \u201ccome to their door like we did\u201d if they wanted to talk.<\/p>\n

Us <\/i>reached out to the Cosby family attorney, Clayton Simms<\/strong>, and Bravo for comment.<\/p>\n

Robert Cosby Jr. Secretly Got Married in 2022<\/b><\/h2>\n

Robert Jr. reportedly wed Alexiana Arian Smokoff<\/strong> in August 2022. Mary did not find out about the nuptials until about a year later when she confronted him about his relationship status on RHOSLC<\/em> following rumors.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy am I hearing rumors that you\u2019re married? So if I\u2019m hearing it from people, I want to hear it from you,\u201d Mary told her son in an October 2023 episode.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike, I went to the courthouse,\u201d Robert Jr. admitted, to which Mary replied, \u201cLord have mercy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later in the episode, she expressed her disappointment over her son\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not ready for marriage,\u201d Mary said in a confessional interview. \u201cHe has no idea that he has to man up. Like, he\u2019s going to be the sole provider \u2014 I mean, I\u2019m not going to be providing for him and her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert Cosby Jr. Overdosed and Was Rushed to the Hospital in 2023<\/b><\/h2>\n

Us<\/em> has exclusively obtained a Salt Lake City police report revealing that Robert Jr. suffered an overdose at his parents\u2019 home on February 14, 2023, just three years before his death.<\/p>\n

Salt Lake City fire and medical personnel arrived at the scene and provided life-saving services to Mary\u2019s unconscious son.<\/p>\n

\u201cI assisted in strapping ill\/sick person Robert Cosby [Jr.] to a medical chair to get him down stairs and safely into an ambulance. Medical staff informed me that Robert overdosed on drugs and that med initiated chest compressions until Robert became conscious,\u201d the officer\u2019s report read.<\/p>\n

Robert Jr. was then transported to the hospital.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMary Cosby\u2019s son, Robert Cosby Jr., had planned to fight his ex-wife\u2019s domestic violence claims weeks before his death. Court documents obtained exclusively by Us Weekly show that Robert Jr., 23, filed a motion against his ex, Alexiana Arian Smokoff, on February 10, accusing her of \u201cfabricating\u201d an alleged 2024 domestic violence incident. \u201cDefendant Robert [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Robert Cosby Jr. and His Wife Allegedly Had a Domestic Violence Incident in May 2024<\/b><\/h2>\n

According to a Salt Lake City police report obtained by Us<\/em>, the alleged victim \u2014 who was identified at the time as A.S. and later through court documents revealed to be Smokoff \u2014 alleged Robert Jr. got physical with her<\/a> in May 2024 after she \u201cflushed his drugs down the toilet.\u201d (She did not report the alleged incident until November 2025.)<\/p>\n

In the report, she alleged that Robert Jr. became \u201cextremely upset\u201d before pushing and kicking her in the stomach. She then claimed he \u201cgrabbed her by the throat\u201d and \u201cstrangled her\u201d to the point that she lost consciousness.<\/p>\n

The alleged victim claimed she did not report the incident to police at the time because \u201cRobert\u2019s family members contacted her and begged her not to involve law enforcement.\u201d She also told officers that \u201cshe believes Robert could kill her.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Mary\u2019s statement to police on January 9, 2026, she denied being aware of any physical altercations between her son and her then-daughter-in-law. Mary also denied calling Smokoff, claiming she didn\u2019t even have her phone number, per the report.<\/p>\n

Robert denied the allegations in 2025 while locked up for a separate incident.<\/p>\n

In response to the alleged May 2024 incident, Simms exclusively told Us<\/em> in March 2026: \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate these false allegations are popping up at a time when Mary and Robert Sr. are grieving. They\u2019re focused on healing. They\u2019re focused on good and positive memories of their son. Robert Jr.\u2019s relationship with his ex-wife was toxic and difficult. Mary has never been convicted of any crime. There are some false statements in some of those reports. Rather than address them directly, she\u2019s just focused on grieving and moving forward in a positive way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert Cosby Jr.\u2019s Emotional Confession on <\/b>RHOSLC<\/i><\/b><\/h2>\n

On a November 2024 episode of RHOSLC<\/i>, Robert Jr. confessed to his mom about his substance abuse and mental health struggles<\/a> after she noticed he had been behaving differently.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m taking Xanax. I just take half to chill me out and then I had an Adderall to balance out the Xanax,\u201d he said. \u201cAt first, I was like, \u2018I\u2019m going to just stick to natural stuff.\u2019 Then, I went to a party, and someone gave me Xanax. I started buying it. Then, I started doing Xanax with acid and then molly with Xanax. I really like Xanax, so I mix it with everything. Xanax and cocaine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert Jr. also told Mary he \u201cwanted to die\u201d during his lowest point, but she was \u201cthe only reason I didn\u2019t kill myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just felt like a stain,\u201d he shared. \u201cI just felt like this world wasn\u2019t for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mary responded by telling her only child that she loved him \u201cmore than anything in this world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGod gave you to me. You\u2019re the only thing that ever made me happy. Before I had you, I was never happy,\u201d she shared through tears. \u201cYou came and you were so real. It was everything I hoped for in a person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mary Cosby Got Candid About Robert Cosby Jr.\u2019s Struggles<\/b><\/h2>\n

Mary spoke out about her late son\u2019s addiction to Us<\/i> in a November 2024 interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a heavy topic,\u201d she said about Robert Jr.\u2019s situation. \u201cBut for me, because it all just came at once on me, I didn\u2019t expect it, but I\u2019m taking it day by day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert Cosby Jr. Went to Rehab in 2024<\/b><\/h2>\n

By December 2024, Mary revealed that her son had completed a stint in rehab<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe stayed for a month. He completed it. He did an excellent job. He came out a new person,\u201d she told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live<\/i>. \u201cI am so proud of him, so proud of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert Cosby Jr. Was Arrested for Alleged Trespassing and Assault<\/b><\/h2>\n

Robert Jr. was arrested in September 2025 after trying to break into his then-father-in-law\u2019s Salt Lake City home, where Smokoff was living.<\/p>\n

Per a report, local police responded to a domestic violence call after Robert Jr. allegedly tried to get into the house through a dog door. He then reportedly assaulted someone on the front lawn.<\/p>\n

He was taken into custody on several charges, including criminal trespassing, assault, failure to stop at the command of law enforcement and three counts of violating a court order.<\/p>\n

The following month, Mary called the arrest \u201ca blessing in disguise\u201d while speaking to People<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was for his good,\u201d she stated at the time. \u201cI think he needed that. He\u2019s never encountered anything like that. \u2026 I feel like he needed that and that he understands that that\u2019s the wrong journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prosecutors dropped several charges against Robert Jr., per a deal in which he pleaded guilty to trespassing and assault<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Robert Cosby Jr.\u2019s Wife Filed for Divorce in November 2025<\/b><\/h2>\n

Smokoff filed for divorce<\/a> on November 24, 2025, in a Utah court while Robert Jr. was still in jail.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnderstanding and recognizing the relationship was difficult for Robert based on his religion and background. To him, marriage is sacred and forever,\u201d Simms told People. \u201cHis parents were his example and they\u2019ve been married for 27 years. Robert was slow to recognize and accept his marriage was over and continued to connect with his soon-to-be ex-wife. Robert has accepted responsibility for his mistakes and has pleaded guilty to several misdemeanors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert Cosby Jr. Pleaded Guilty to Several Charges in November 2025<\/b><\/h2>\n

Robert Jr. faced 14 charges for multiple incidents involving his wife and father-in-law spanning from September to November 2025.<\/p>\n

One day after Smokoff filed for divorce, Robert Jr. pleaded guilty to eight of the charges<\/a>: one count of felony property damage or destruction greater than or equal to $5,000, two counts of violation of a pretrial protective order \u2014 obtained by Smokoff \u2014 in addition to one count of assault on a peace officer, one count of violation of a jail release court order, two counts of criminal trespass on a dwelling with intent to cause annoyance, injury or fear (all Class A misdemeanors) and one count of Class B misdemeanor assault.<\/p>\n

The other six remaining charges were dismissed with prejudice.<\/p>\n

The court declined to release Robert Jr. from jail and ordered him to remain behind bars until his sentencing in February 2026.<\/p>\n

Robert Cosby Jr. Was Questioned Over Alleged Domestic Violence Incident in January 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n

While locked up, Robert Jr. was questioned by authorities over the alleged 2024 domestic violence incident<\/a> with his then-wife.<\/p>\n

Per his statement obtained by Us<\/em>, Robert Jr. admitted \u201cthey were using fentanyl at the time\u201d and he did \u201cnot remember everything\u201d about the alleged incident. Robert Jr. \u201crecalled arguing\u201d with her \u201cbecause she took some of his \u2018drugs.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He then told police, \u201cI pushed her just with my hands\u201d and \u201cI might have kicked her off the bed or something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert Jr. denied seeing any injuries on Smokoff\u2019s body as a result of the incident. He also claimed he went into Mary\u2019s bedroom and told her he had pushed Smokoff off the bed.<\/p>\n

The report also stated that Robert Jr. \u201ccried\u201d to his mother \u201cbecause he was going through a lot,\u201d blaming his fentanyl use.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobert and [Mary] have such a good relationship, Robert is honest with [Mary],\u201d the report noted, while flagging Robert Jr.\u2019s mental health.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobert thinks he was in \u2018psychosis\u2019 for a bit because he was \u2018acting erratic and irrational\u2019 and not really acting like himself. Robert described himself during \u2018psychosis\u2019 as doing \u2018stuff\u2019 he \u2018didn\u2019t mean,\u2019\u201d per the report.<\/p>\n

Mary Cosby Cried Over Son\u2019s Addiction Issues on<\/b> RHOSLC<\/i><\/b> Reunion in January 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n

During the season 6 reunion of RHOSLC<\/i>, which aired in January 2026, Mary got emotional<\/a> about her son being behind bars.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know he\u2019s somewhere where he\u2019s not using,\u201d she responded when asked about Robert Jr.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt some point, I have to step back so that he can learn and he can make his own decision,\u201d Mary continued, wiping away tears. \u201cUnfortunately, he is learning the hard way, but I\u2019m OK with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cYou don\u2019t want to see your kid suffer, but I know it\u2019s good and I\u2019d rather him be there than dead.\u201d<\/p>\n

While facing two domestic violence charges<\/a> \u2014 felony aggravated assault and felony assault \u2014\u00a0Robert Jr. and his attorney filed court documents denying his ex-wife\u2019s claims about the alleged 2024 incident.<\/p>\n

The motion to appoint counsel was filed on February 10 and obtained exclusively by <\/a>Us<\/i>. The documents accused Smokoff of \u201cfabricating\u201d the allegations in \u201cretaliation for a failed marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert Jr. and his lawyer wanted to bring charges against her, but due to his death, the case is now a moot argument.<\/p>\n

Us <\/i>reached out to the public defenders assigned to the case for Smokoff\u2019s comment.<\/p>\n

Robert Cosby Jr. Died After Suspected Overdose<\/b><\/h2>\n

The Salt Lake City Police Department confirmed to Us<\/em> that authorities responded to a call for an overdose on February 23, 2026, and discovered Robert Jr. dead upon arrival<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Page Six obtained the dispatch call<\/a>, with the operator saying, \u201cTwenty-three-year-old male, not conscious, not breathing. One dose of Narcan given. Police have been called. Three units in route.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert Jr.\u2019s cause of death has not been confirmed. He was 23.<\/p>\n
