NEW YORK<\/strong> \u2013 In need of a global superstar for a sports anthem? The singer initially felt trepidation. <\/p>\n \u201cI’m really precautious when it comes to songs like this one,\u201d Balvin said. \u201cIt’s like touching the Mona Lisa.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI have so much respect for anthems like that,\u201d he said. So, he had to take \u201ca totally different approach\u201d to make it work; he wanted to avoid straightforward comparisons to the original recording.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was like a puzzle,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n Mark’s rich, crystalline voice is the first heard on the track; she sings the song’s original English lyrics. Vai transforms its iconic guitar; Barker amplifies its percussion.<\/p>\n The greatest difference is found in Balvin’s contributions. He wrote a new verse \u2014 in Spanish \u2014 atop production courtesy his collaborator L.E.X.V.Z, a sound he describes as \u201cBrazilian funk with hard strings, kind of like hip-hop.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201c’Jump’ is not a f\u00fatbol song,\u201d he said of the original, using the Spanish word for soccer. \u201cSo that\u2019s why I had to put the Latin love and passion for f\u00fatbol (in the lyrics).”<\/p>\n \u201cEl f\u00fatbol es nuestro idioma \/ Aqu\u00ed todos somos mi gente,\u201d he raps. In English: \u201cFootball is our language \/ Here, we\u2019re all my people.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cF\u00fatbol is about bringing everyone together,\u201d he says. It’s a particularly resonant message as sports fans and organizers alike<\/a> are considering the ways in which President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown may impact the tournament.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI wish this administration open their mind and see, like, this is a world event. This is for all of us,\u201d he said. \u201cLet the people really have fun and enjoy and show that the United States can definitely pull off a World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n The new \u201cJump,\u201d out Friday, was released through Coca-Cola’s newly minted in-house label Real Thing Records, in partnership with Capitol Records. The \u201cJump\u201d video, art directed and designed by McFlyy, is illustrated in the style of anime \u2014 amplifying its aim to reflect global cultural interest.<\/p>\n Coca-Cola has been an official sponsor for the FIFA World Cup since 1978 and has produced a number of its own anthems for the event, including Jason Derulo\u2019s \u201cColors\u201d in 2018 and a reimagining of Queen\u2019s \u201cA Kind of Magic\u201d in 2022 featuring Mexican singer Danna Paola, Egyptian rapper Felukah and Saudi Arabian singer TamTam.<\/p>\n \u201cReimagining a song as iconic as Van Halen\u2019s \u2018Jump\u2019 came with a real sense of responsibility,\u201d Burke wrote to The Associated Press in an exclusive statement. \u201cAll four artists leaned into the process as if this was their own single. Our goal was to create an anthem that celebrates the full spectrum of emotions of the tournament and feels just as powerful in a stadium as it does blasting from a car with your friends. We were able to do exactly that.\u201d<\/p>\n As for Balvin? He hopes that people respond to the energy of the song, and truly view it as \u201ca f\u00fatbol song, you know? And that people vibe with it.\u201d<\/p>\n And that is f\u00fatbol \u2014 not soccer.
