Anybody who\u2019s seen \u201cLove Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette\u201d knows what it should really be called: \u201cLove Letter.\u201d<\/p>\n
I can hardly recall a kinder, gentler or more appealing depiction of the Kennedys ever onscreen.<\/p>\n
Yet Jack Schlossberg, President John F. Kennedy\u2019s attention-loving grandson, is so enraged by the popular new FX miniseries<\/a> that last week he took to TV to condemn it while running for office.<\/p>\n On CBS Sunday Morning, the Democratic candidate for New York\u2019s 12th congressional district went off on \u201cLove Story\u201d\u2019s portrait of his famous family, calling it \u201cgrotesque.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n Grotesque? Jack should go see \u201cThe Bride!\u201d.<\/p>\n The 33-year-old son of Caroline Kennedy laid the blame at the prolific feet of executive producer Ryan Murphy.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThe guy knows nothing about what he\u2019s talking about, and he\u2019s making a ton of money on a grotesque display of someone else\u2019s life,\u201d he ranted.<\/p>\n Um, that is what movies and television based on actual events tend to do, yes.<\/p>\n The thing is, the phenomenally entertaining \u201cLove Story,\u201d starring Paul Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon, is the best and nicest p.r. the Kennedy clan has had in ages.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n It made me like them!<\/p>\n Of course the show begins and presumably will end with the death of Kennedy, Bessette and her sister Lauren in a 1999 plane crash over Martha\u2019s Vineyard.\u00a0<\/p>\n But that was a major historical event involving the son of an assassinated former president.\u00a0Obviously somebody was going to dramatize it.\u00a0<\/p>\n But apart from the underpinning tragedy, \u201cLove Story\u201d is a fizzy and often sublime show about a normal New York woman who basically becomes an American princess \u2014 and the highs and lows of that rare experience. Viewers are falling hard for her and her man.\u00a0<\/p>\n The alluring series of flirty East Village dinners at Panna and Indochine, relatable couple fights and sneaky paparazzi evasion has restored some romance to the Camelot clan that the public has grown weary of and that has been repeatedly tarnished by harsh reassessments.\u00a0<\/p>\n Ahem, perhaps you might have heard that Kennedy men do not have a great track record with women.<\/p>\n \u201cLove Story\u201d also, for better or worse, has taught Gen. Z who the Kennedys are<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n The Times of London reported that young fans of the series are joining Schlossberg\u2019s campaign <\/a>solely because they\u2019re obsessed with it and its privileged East Coast elites they were previously unaware of.<\/p>\n \u201cI think a lot of people love him because they are in love with the show and who JFK Jr was,\u201d a 27-year-old Schlossberg volunteer said.\u00a0<\/p>\n She discovered her candidate by Googling JFK. Jr. to learn more about him and his relatives. See? Schlossberg is meaningfully benefiting from \u201cLove Story.\u201d<\/p>\n Yes, his mother Caroline, her mom Jackie and grandmother Ethel all come off stiff and strict. Much like they always have and did!\u00a0<\/p>\n But, come on, that family should be paying Ryan Murphy \u2014 not berating him.\u00a0<\/p>\n How can the Kennedys act like \u201cLove Story\u201d is somehow worse than their other recent moments in the spotlight?<\/p>\n It\u2019s certainly not former New York Magazine reporter Olivia Nuzzi alleging in her memoir that Secretary of Health Robert Kennedy Jr.\u2019s favorite part of her body is her nose.<\/p>\n Or President Kennedy raping Marilyn Monroe in the largely fictional and horrendous 2022 film \u201cBlonde<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n There was the episode of \u201cThe Crown\u201d when Jackie O. got nasty and called Queen Elizabeth II \u201cincurious, unintelligent and unremarkable.\u201d<\/p>\n
