Former 7th Heaven <\/i>child star Beverley Mitchell<\/strong><\/a> is looking back on her cancer scare from her early 30s.<\/p>\n

\u201cYesterday, I got a colonoscopy, and I am sharing this because I think that there\u2019s a lot of people that are freaked out by it or embarrassed,\u201d Mitchell, 45, said in a Saturday, March 7, Instagram<\/a> video. \u201cI have no shame. Quite a few years ago, I had seen a doctor who looked at my blood work and was, like, \u2018Hey, I\u2019m not saying anything but it looks like you have markers that are similar to those that have colon cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mitchell, who was in her early 30s at the time, underwent a colonoscopy for further clarity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to the gastro[enterologists], demanded to get a colonoscopy. At the time, I also had hemorrhoids so I had experienced blood in my stool,\u201d she explained. \u201cThe gastro agreed, so I had a colonoscopy. Come to find out, I had the biggest precancerous polyp<\/a> he has ever seen in a young woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe cast of 7th Heaven has come a long way since the series ended in 2007 after 11 seasons. The WB drama ran from August 1996 to May 2007, with the later seasons airing on The CW. Stephen Collins and Catherine Hicks starred as reverend Eric Camden and his wife, Annie, respectively. Barry Watson (Matt), [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to Mitchell, she \u201cpretty much saved [her] own life\u201d by advocating for the medical procedure.<\/p>\n

\u201cI followed up, three years later [and] had another colonoscopy. It was perfectly clean,\u201d she said. \u201cThen, I was bad. It has been eight years since my last colonoscopy. I was supposed to be on the regimen every three years. It\u2019s been eight. I was well overdue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mitchell finally decided to get a colonoscopy after seeing various \u201csigns\u201d to go back to the doctor, including James Van Der Beek\u2019s recent death. (Fellow child actor Van Der Beek<\/strong> died in February after battling stage III colorectal cancer<\/a>. He was 48.)<\/p>\n

\u201cListen, if we get screened and if we go and get our colonoscopies and we pay attention, we can catch things early,\u201d Mitchell stated. \u201cI am happy to report that my colonoscopy came back perfectly clean, so now I\u2019m on the five-year cycle [and] I\u2019m no longer high-risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Mitchell was initially fearful about what doctors would find in her labwork, she\u2019s grateful that she didn\u2019t wait any longer to undergo a colonoscopy.<\/p>\n

\u201cPutting it off isn\u2019t going to make the situation any better, it\u2019s going to make it worse,\u201d the actress added. \u201cThis is my PSA that if you\u2019ve been putting off your colonoscopy, go and get it now.\u201d<\/p>\n
