Pete Docter<\/a>, chief creative officer at Pixar<\/a> and director of \u201cMonsters Inc.<\/a>,\u201d \u201cUp<\/a>\u201d and \u201cInside Out<\/a>,\u201d recently told the Wall Street Journal why the studio decided to completely overhaul 2025\u2019s \u201cElio<\/a>\u201d and cut out the film\u2019s LGBTQ storyline.<\/p>\n

Docter told the WSJ that Pixar didn\u2019t want to expose its young audience to things they weren\u2019t ready to see or hadn\u2019t discussed with their parents. He said, \u201cWe\u2019re making a movie, not hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cElio<\/a>\u201d follows a lonely kid who looks to the stars for friends after being rejected as an outsider by other kids his age. Despite the clever premise, WSJ reports that the film tested poorly in early screenings, with most audiences saying they wouldn\u2019t pay to see it in theaters.
