Coventry five-piece The Institutes have brought out their latest single \u201cThe Mountain Song\u201d \u2013 a song that the band appear to have been wanting to release for some time according to their social media.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s also the second single from their forthcoming album, and they seem to have adopted the phrase \u201cOriginal Stompgeezer Material\u201d \u2013 which did catch my attention\u2026<\/p>\n
The Institutes describe the track as \u201cirresistible rhythmic propulsion and atmospheric guitar layers that build toward a powerful, singalong lift.\u201d \u2013 so let\u2019s see.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s certainly an anthemnic beginning \u2013 with almost a teasing twang that catches your attention, and guides you into the bridge of the track by subtly adding more and more elements, with the vocals coming into force and an infectious drumbeat tying it all together.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s a lot going on quite quickly, but I wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s overwhelming as such \u2013 it\u2019s quite chilled out in that aspect \u2013 but there is plenty to get stuck into.<\/p>\n
There is a lot of momentum throughout and because it\u2019s quite a dominating instrumental, it did take me a couple of listens to really capture the lyrics and let them settle, that\u2019s not necessarily a bad thing, it\u2019s quite an easy listen considering how much is going on \u2013 but there is a lot of depth in the lyrics and it\u2019s got quite a background that\u2019s made subtle by the backing track.<\/p>\n
The only thing I would say and this is likely very different if I was hearing it live, is that the instrumental does overpower the vocals a bit too much for me, each instrument compliments each other beautifully, but then I feel that at points, the vocals do get a bit lost, which is a shame because it\u2019s a cracking voice \u2013 but that\u2019s just my personal take.<\/p>\n
So all-in-all \u2013 it\u2019s a fantastic track, lots of depth, lots of potential and some brilliant musical talent, it does what The Institutes described and it hooked me in more with each listen, I reckon it would be a fantastic track to see live and I look forward to see what else they come out with in future.<\/p>\n
