Mountbatten-Windsor has denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>But there are also <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/andrew-paid-woman-sex-with-these-questions-remain-4261357?ico=in-line_link\" id=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/andrew-paid-woman-sex-with-these-questions-remain-4261357\">questions over the source of the funding<\/a> for the former duke\u2019s settlement with his sexual abuse accuser <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/virginia-giuffre?srsltid=AfmBOoq1WBvehJrIvBXWDY0FDYu1waU9NfErkMYkBXAM0lzVnK_mu6_T&amp;ico=in-line_link\">Virginia Giuffre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Labour MPs told <em>The i Paper<\/em> there needs to be an investigation into the <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/andrew-must-repay-any-misused-taxpayer-money-says-reeves-4258064?ico=in-line_link\" id=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/andrew-must-repay-any-misused-taxpayer-money-says-reeves-4258064?\">source of the funds<\/a> and what was known within the Royal Family.<\/p>\n<p>Rachael Maskell, the Labour MP for York Central, said that if the monarchy is to remain in place, there needs to be \u201csignificant reform which brings greater transparency and scrutiny to their work, what they achieve and how this is funded\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"qa\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The monarchy\u2019s finances<\/h2>\n<p>The monarchy is provided funding via the Sovereign Grant which stood at \u00a3132.1m a year in 2025-26.<\/p>\n<p>The grant includes funding for:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The maintenance of royal residences known as the Occupied Royal Palaces<\/li>\n<li>Royal travel for official engagements in the UK and overseas undertaken by the King and other members of the Royal Family acting on his behalf<\/li>\n<li>Employment costs for Royal Household staff who support the work of the King<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The King also receives funds from the <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/king-charless-estate-making-millions-from-assets-of-people-who-die-without-a-will-2774637?srsltid=AfmBOorY59sgjJgw_IqpPn4aH80TBrtsxcAYsA4H-LcUMIbv1aw5kJqV&amp;ico=in-line_link\">Duchy of Lancaster<\/a> while the Prince of Wales receives net profits from the <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/prince-william-avoided-3m-property-taxes-3520542?srsltid=AfmBOoqNUxbhdhx836LsTAk_mDd5cqlcyI8XueYf1HfuxiDG9Eeh72bn&amp;ico=in-line_link\">Duchy of Cornwall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The King derives private income from investments and inherited wealth, which is not made public<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>She called for a special joint committee of MPs and members of the House of Lords to be set up in Parliament to examine this.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cThe assertions that Mr Mountbatten Windsor spent public money on activities for which it has been alleged women were exploited is an abhorrence and an abuse. In addition there is real concern that he might have used an element of public funds to silence Ms Giuffre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public must know what their hard-earned taxes are being spent on and it is sickening that a family with so much affluence take public money when people are struggling to pay the rent, food and utilities bills.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-datawrapper wp-block-embed-datawrapper\">\n<p><figure><iframe title=\"To what extent do you support or oppose the UK having a monarchy?\" aria-label=\"Small multiple pie chart\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-R42lY\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/R42lY\/3\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" height=\"342\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Richard Burgon, a former shadow Lord Chancellor, previously told <em>The i Paper<\/em> a \u201cfull independent review\u201d is needed, adding: \u201cThis is not just about Andrew\u2019s conduct, it is about the funding of the settlement, institutional knowledge of that settlement, and responsibility within the Royal Household.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The BMG poll found that 49 per cent of voters support the UK having a monarchy, down from 52 per cent in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>But only a fifth (21 per cent) said they wanted to abolish the monarchy, compared with 23 per cent three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>A majority of 62 per cent believe here will still be a monarchy in 20 years\u2019 time, compared with 21 per cent who think it unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Graham Smith, the head of anti-monarchy campaign group Republic, said the royals should be as transparent about finances as politicians or any other public body. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-datawrapper wp-block-embed-datawrapper\">\n<p><figure><iframe title=\"Would you prefer the UK to remain a monarchy or to become a republic\" aria-label=\"Pie Chart\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-yJmDK\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/yJmDK\/2\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" height=\"569\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>He said: \u201cIf anyone spends public money the public have a right to know about it. It\u2019s that simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith said support for the monarchy used to be around 75 per cent and above \u2013 indicating a longer-term decline and a signal that \u201cwill not survive in the long run\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThe monarchy has no place in a modern democracy. It\u2019s running out of road and the sooner it goes the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Lownie, author of the recent biography on Mountbatten-Windsor, <em>Entitled<\/em>, said: \u201cAs a monarchist who wants it to continue, but with continued trust and respect, I welcome greater transparency about royal finances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also hope they will now be open to more parliamentary scrutiny.
