Actor Rosanna Arquette, who portrayed the girlfriend of drug dealer Lance (Eric Stoltz) in the movie \u201cPulp Fiction,\u201d has called out its director for using the N-word in his films. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Arquette said she thinks Quentin Tarantino has been given a \u201chall pass\u201d to use the racial slur in movies like \u201cDjango Unchained,\u201d \u201cThe Hateful Eight,\u201d \u201cJackie Brown\u201d and \u201cPulp Fiction.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cPersonally I am over the use of the N-word \u2014 I hate it. I cannot stand that he has been given a hall pass,\u201d Arquette told The Sunday Times (UK)<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s not art, it\u2019s just racist and creepy.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Arquette also noted that she thought \u201cPulp Fiction\u201d was \u201ciconic\u201d on a \u201clot of levels,\u201d however, she stressed that Tarantino had no business using the derogatory term. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Arquette isn\u2019t the only Hollywood star who has decried Tarantino\u2019s usage of the pejorative. In 2012, director Spike Lee criticized Tarantino for using the N-word in \u201cDjango Unchained,\u201d telling Vibe magazine that doing so was \u201cdisrespectful to my ancestors.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n In \u201cDjango Unchained,\u201d a film set in the 1850s about a slave (Jamie Foxx) who goes on a mission with an unorthodox German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to rescue his wife (Kerry Washington) from a psychotic slave owner (Leonardo DiCaprio), the N-word was used more than 100 times by both Black and white actors. <\/span>The film received five nominations at the 2013 Academy Awards, with Waltz winning an Oscar for best supporting actor. Tarantino also won for best original screenplay for the controversial film. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Tarantino <\/span>used the N-word<\/span><\/a> while defending himself against critics backstage at the 2013 Golden Globes after he scored the best screenplay award for \u201cDjango Unchained.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThey\u2019re saying I should soften it, they\u2019re saying I should lie, they\u2019re saying I should white wash, they\u2019re saying I should massage,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I never do that when it comes to my characters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Nearly a decade later, Tarantino defiantly maintained his stance on using the racial slur during a 2022 appearance on \u201cWho\u2019s Talking to Chris Wallace,\u201d<\/a> and urged filmgoers who were offended to \u201csee something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cIf you have a problem with my movies, then they aren\u2019t the movies to go see. Apparently, I\u2019m not making them for you,\u201d Tarantino said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Actor Samuel L. Jackson, who has starred in six Tarantino films that repeatedly used the N-word, defended Tarantino\u2019s work, arguing that it was a contextual matter. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cEvery time someone wants an example of overuse of the N-word, they go to Quentin \u2014 it\u2019s unfair,\u201d Jackson told UK\u2019s The Sunday Times <\/a>in 2022. \u201cHe\u2019s just telling the story, and the characters do talk like that. When [\u201912 Years a Slave\u2019 director] Steve McQueen does it, it\u2019s art. He\u2019s an artiste. Quentin\u2019s just a popcorn filmmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Jackson also called the backlash that Tarantino has faced \u201csome bullshit\u201d in a 2019 interview with Esquire magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Explaining that he \u201cwarned Quentin about [keeping] the whole \u2018n****r storage\u2019 [movie line in the script], he continued, \u201cI was like, \u2018Don\u2019t say \u2018nigger storage.\u2019\u201d He\u2019s like, \u2018No, I\u2019m going to say it like that.\u2019 And we tried to soften it by making his wife black, because that wasn\u2019t originally written.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cBut you can\u2019t just tell a writer he can\u2019t talk, write the words, put the words in the mouths of the people from their ethnicities, the way that they use their words,\u201d Jackson added. \u201cYou cannot do that, because then it becomes an untruth; it\u2019s not honest.
