\u201cLate Show\u201d host Stephen Colbert<\/a> took a shot at his corporate bosses as he was honored at the Writers Guild Awards in New York on Sunday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Colbert was given the Walter Bernstein Award<\/a>, which the WGA said is for a member who has \u201cdemonstrated with creativity, grace and bravery a willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n But at the ceremony, Colbert said he doesn\u2019t \u201cdeserve\u201d any parallels to the award\u2019s namesake, who was blacklisted<\/a> during McCarthyism in the 1950s for being a member<\/a> of the Communist Party. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThis is not the 1950s. This is not the Red Scare. And, as far as I can tell, no one in late night is fomenting a revolution,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cAs we know, the revolution will not be televised. It was going to be televised but then Paramount bought it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n That was a reference to his show being canceled<\/a> by CBS last summer \u2015 something President Donald Trump<\/a> had long demanded \u2015 which came just as corporate parent Paramount sought FCC approval to complete a merger.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n That merger was approved just one week later<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Critics believe Paramount cut Colbert to help seal the deal, but the company said it was \u201cpurely a financial decision\u201d as the show was losing $40 million a year \u2015 a number many, including late night rival Jimmy Kimmel<\/a>, have said they found hard to believe. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n Colbert also made a reference to that in his Sunday speech. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cEvidently, the revolution was losing, like, $40 million a year. It had to go,\u201d he said, then joked about his own potential future. \u201cI hear the revolution is thinking about starting a Substack.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
