Real Housewives, Comedy Roasters, and some FOJs (Friends of Jane Lynch) match wits on the new \u2018Celebrity Weakest Link.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cThe themes have really elevated this show. It\u2019s made it much more fun for me,\u201d Jane Lynch<\/a> told TV Insider at a taping for the first season of Celebrity Weakest Link<\/a>, a revamped version of the well-known game show she\u2019s hosted since 2020. The new twist is that instead of featuring regular folks in the hot seat (or more accurately, at the hot podium), each of the 11 new episodes will bring together eight celebs connected by a theme like Reality Couples or Football Legends.<\/p>\n We stopped by Television City in Los Angeles to check out how well the \u201cTV Doctors\u201d \u2013 a mix of reality show MDs and actors who\u2019ve played physicians \u2013 operated under pressure.<\/p>\n During a practice round, Lynch, statuesque in a black suit, encouraged the contestants as the director zipped around explaining to Torrey Devitto<\/a> (Chicago Med<\/a>) when she should look at the camera or Dr. Dubrow (a cosmetic surgeon on Botched<\/a>) when he should hit the big red button used to \u201cbank\u201d cash winnings. The favorite seemed to be brainy Hill Harper<\/a> (CSI: NY<\/a> and The Good Doctor<\/a>). But you couldn\u2019t count out the funny and serious Kal Penn<\/a> (House<\/a>), kind and patient Ryan Eggold<\/a> (New Amsterdam<\/a>), hilarious Jason George<\/a> (Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/a>), or reserved Dr. Will Kirby<\/a> (Big Brother 2<\/a>). And it was clear from how fast she picked up the game play that Dr. Sandra Lee (Dr. Pimple Popper<\/a>) was a force to be reckoned with.<\/p>\n She also has a fan in Lynch, who told us, \u201cDr. Pimple Popper, I watch on YouTube. She pops pimples and not just the small ones. She\u2019s very kind and makes [patients] feel good about the fact that they have huge cystic acne the size of the \u201cbank\u201d button. I love it. My wife walks out of the room, but my niece and my sister, the three of us, send each other videos.\u00a0 I told Dr. Sandra, \u2018You are a celebrity in our home.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n No favoritism was displayed by Lynch once game play started. She also didn\u2019t give away that she\u2019d picked up on an unusual player strategy. The host told us after the game wrapped, \u201cWe uncovered an alliance between a certain faction of that cast, and it was quite interesting to watch it develop. I suspected it after about two or three rounds.\u201d<\/p>\n Even though Lynch is firm with contestants, she never intentionally rattles them. \u201cI like to make people feel comfortable and also have kind of the demeanor of a strict school marm. I think that kind of works,\u201d says Lynch. \u201cI think these folks know that my tongue is firmly wedged into my cheek and there hopefully is a twinkle in my eye, unlike Anne Robinson<\/a> [the host of The Weakest Link\u2018s first iteration, which ran from 2000 to 2012]. She was as serious as a heart attack, and that\u2019s why that show was so good. But I didn\u2019t for a minute think I should go that route myself.\u201d<\/p>\n Lynch\u2019s likability has made her plenty of friends in the entertainment industry. One of the themed episodes is \u201c8 Degrees of Jane.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s a small community, this acting community. Even if I haven\u2019t worked with them, I know of them, and there\u2019s an instant familiarity,\u201d says Lynch, who\u2019s won five Emmys and appeared in plenty of scripted fare, most recently Only Murders in the Building<\/a>. \u201cThe last season where I was the murder victim was probably a peak moment of my life,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n Her breakthrough role was in Glee<\/a>, and one themed episode will feature castmates from the musical drama. Lynch told us, \u201cMy niece worked on the show. She knows all these kids \u2014 they\u2019re not kids anymore! They\u2019re in their thirties. So, I see them a lot. They come over to the house, we have parties. We\u2019re still very much in touch. They all said yes to do this. I\u2019m really grateful to them. That episode is going to be\u2026 wow. The people that you think would be the dumbest were the smartest. I don\u2019t mean to \u2014 because I\u2019m a blonde \u2014 but there\u2019s a couple of blondes that when I heard they were doing the show, I was like, \u2018They\u2019re not going to do well at all,’\u201d Lynch laughs.<\/p>\n After the interview, we played a one-on-one round of TV trivia with Lynch. We killed it \u2026 until Lynch asked the final question. \u201cOn The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel<\/a>, who won an Emmy for playing\u2026\u201d We didn\u2019t hear the rest. The studio suddenly seemed vaster and darker, the pinpricks of spotlights brighter. What was the name of the show\u2019s lead? Um. How could we blank on this? So embarrassing! Finally, we blurted, \u201cRachel Brosnahan<\/a>!\u201d Lynch gave us a hard stare. \u201cNo, it was Jane Lynch.\u201d The rest of the question had been \u201c\u2026Sophie Lennon.\u201d Yep, Lynch won an Emmy for that role in 2019.<\/p>\n So when you watch a game show and marvel at how a doctor could forget something that anyone who watched The Pitt would know (and you will!), have some sympathy.
