{"id":2320508,"date":"2026-03-09T22:51:02","date_gmt":"2026-03-09T22:51:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2320508"},"modified":"2026-03-09T22:51:02","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T22:51:02","slug":"back-to-black-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/back-to-black-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Back to Black"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-article-body=\"true\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The last four years have been especially heavy for Zakk Wylde.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">From filling in for his departed friend Dimebag Darrell on a world tour with Pantera, to honoring musical patriarch Ozzy Osbourne at the historic \u201cBack to the Beginning\u201d show in Birmingham, England, this past summer, and then getting the devastating news that the legend died just over two weeks later\u2013 the emotional highs and lows have been a lot, but they\u2019ve also fueled his creative output more than ever before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">More from Spin:<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As his own band <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blacklabelsociety.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Black Label Society;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Black Label Society<\/a> (featuring JD DeServio on bass, Jeff Fabb on drums and Dario Lorina on rhythm guitar) gears up for its first tour since 2021 this week, Wylde is understandably reflective while discussing the long-awaited new material, even while he maintains the witty, comical demeanor he\u2019s known for.<\/p>\n<p>The band\u2019s twelfth studio album, <em>Engines of Demolition,<\/em> is coming March 27 and though making it was a decidedly longer process than he\u2019s used to, the final result is as bold and bombastic as anything BLS fans could want. But with this one, they came out in like 2022 and we tracked a batch of stuff. Then they left, and I went out on the road with the Pantera Celebration for about a year. When I came back, we were going to release the record, but then, it was like, \u2018no, we\u2019re going to go back out again with Pantera for another year.\u2019 I came back, wrote some more songs, tracked them, then went out <em>again<\/em> for another year and a half.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Featuring singer Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown, with Wylde tackling Dime\u2019s ferocious fret work and Charlie Benante taking over drummer Vinnie Paul\u2019s pounding rhythms, the Pantera shows were wildly successful tributes to the late brothers who made the band\u2019s metal so potent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Though the seemingly endless touring forced delays, it gave him time to refine his new tunes and continue to write while on tour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">BLS\u2019s signature dark, droll imagery and bluesy yet tempestuous riffage is fully intact, as heard on singles released from 2024 through 2026, such as \u201cThe Gallows,\u201d \u201cLord Humungus,\u201d \u201cBroken and Blind\u201d and \u201cName In Blood.\u201d But there are also narrative nods to the relationships that shaped the musician long ago and the more recent losses that he\u2019s still processing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Wylde\u2019s raucous spirit and imposing stature made him one of rock and roll\u2019s most stupendous guitar gods, but the 59-year-old\u2019s emotive evolution sees him exploring new depths fueled by a myriad of experiences the last few years.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"relative mb-4\">\n<div class=\"relative\"><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/tfW_wPHkAA1DTRD22SfZxw--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTY0MDtjZj13ZWJw\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/spin_digital_media\/184cf25d81292d630947479ed8040dfa\"\/><button aria-label=\"View larger image\" class=\"group absolute bottom-0 size-full\" data-ylk=\"elm:expand;itc:1;sec:image-lightbox;slk:lightbox-open;\"><span class=\"absolute bottom-3 right-3 rounded-full bg-white p-3 opacity-100 shadow-elevation-3 transition-opacity duration-300 group-hover:block group-hover:opacity-100 md:p-[17px] lg:bottom-6 lg:right-6 lg:bg-white\/90 lg:p-5 lg:opacity-0 lg:shadow-none\"><svg viewbox=\"0 0 22 22\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"size-4 lg:size-6\" width=\"22\" height=\"22\"><path d=\"M12.372.92c0-.506.41-.916.915-.916L21 0l-.004 7.712a.917.917 0 0 1-1.832 0V3.183l-6.827 6.828-1.349-1.348 6.828-6.828h-4.529a.915.915 0 0 1-.915-.915M1.835 17.816l6.828-6.828 1.349 1.349-6.829 6.827h4.529a.915.915 0 0 1 0 1.831L0 21l.004-7.713a.916.916 0 0 1 1.831 0z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/button><dialog aria-label=\"Modal Dialog\" aria-modal=\"true\" class=\"fixed bottom-0 left-0 right-0 top-0 z-4 size-full max-h-none max-w-none bg-white hidden\"\/><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI mean, Dime\u2019s infectious energy and his power, you know, it\u2019s in the riffs and all the music,\u201d he says of the slain shredder, a close pal for decades. \u201cAnd then whenever we go out and do the Zakk Sabbath crusades, my appreciation for that music is always there too. I\u2019m just always floored at how amazing the songs are, and then the simplicity between the songs because there\u2019s an art to that as well. That\u2019s definitely an influence. And you know, Tony [Iommi], has always been a huge influence on me. For me, it\u2019s always the music first, then the music inspires a melody and then the lyrics come once I find out what I want to sing about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOzzy\u2019s Song,\u201d his ode to the Prince of Darkness\u2014who was more akin to a family member than a boss\u2014is sure to get the most buzz for the album. He wrote the tune before the icon\u2019s untimely passing and completed it afterward as a way to honor him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The musician, who did a short set with Pantera and performed an ardent tribute to Randy Rhoads on \u201cMr. Crowley,\u201d with Ozzy at \u201cBack to the Beginning,\u201d shared collective shock and heartbreak with the world when Jack Osbourne called him to say his dad had died on July 22, 2025, just 17 days after the triumphant concert, which many in the Ozz camp had hoped might be an annual event. Wylde served as a pallbearer, along with his oldest son Jesse, at the funeral.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe song was sitting on the back burner, but after Ozzy passed away and we laid him the rest, I worked on it when we came home. I sat here at the house in our little library room,\u201d Wylde recalls. \u201cWe have one of Ozzy\u2019s books sitting up there, and I was just listening to the music and looking at him while writing the lyrics. We ended up calling it \u201cOzzy\u2019s Song,\u201d because Barbaranne had been calling it that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Wylde brings up his wife a lot these days, for good reason. Managing his career since he started playing with Ozzy, Barbaranne Wylde has been his partner in love and life since the couple met in high school as teens. They have four kids, ages 13 to 33, and share a deep bond with each other and the Osbournes that goes way beyond music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI was 18 and Zakk was 19 when he got the gig with Ozzy so we basically grew up with them,\u201d Barbaranne shares. \u201cZakk\u2019s mom passed away very early on in his career with Ozzy, and Sharon assumed the role of \u2018mom.\u2019 She\u2019ll introduce him as her oldest, naughtiest child. Ozzy was our oldest son\u2019s godfather and we are all so close. When we got married in Bora Bora, Ozzy and Sharon were the first people we called from the landline at the hotel. We were together for all the most important life events. I love that tattoo. I feel like it\u2019s been him with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>\u201cI saw you yesterday \/ Before you went away \/ Remember when \/ Never thinking it would end.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>Blue skies up above \/ But soon we\u2019d feel the cold \/ Although we knew \/ We chose not to know.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>But it\u2019s okay \/ The skies may cry \/ But I\u2019ll be holding on, holding on.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u2013 \u201cOzzy\u2019s Song\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A gentle yet aching power ballad, \u201cOzzy\u2019s Song\u201d ends the record and gives it a raw, full circle dimension. During our chat with Barbaranne, which took place just after Zakk wowed fans at Amoeba Music in L.A. and hosted a listening event at the nearby rock bar Knucklehead in Hollywood\u2014she reveals that Black Label will be playing the song live for the first time when the tour kicks off, adding that they just filmed a video for it to come out the same day as the album release. It\u2019s sure to be an emotional endeavor, just as playing Dimebag\u2019s parts in Pantera has been these past few years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As seen last week during the Brit Awards\u2019 tribute to Ozzy, in which Wylde\u00a0 played alongside bassist Robert Trujillo, drummer Tommy Clufetos and UK crooner Robbie Williams, his evocative style feels more layered and cathartic than ever, especially on the classics. Still, he adds that \u201cno matter what, your attack and your vibrato is still yours. If Dime was playing the solo to \u2018No More Tears\u2019 or \u2018Mama, I\u2019m Coming Home\u2019 note for note, it wouldn\u2019t matter, I could still tell it was him by his touch and his feel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">His time with Pantera isn\u2019t over, either. The band will support Metallica in Europe this summer and play the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/louderthanlifefestival.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Louder Than Life;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Louder Than Life<\/a> metal fest in Kentucky this fall. Black Label will play the festival too, but before that, their North American tour schedule is packed starting March 6, followed by some European dates before a return to the States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Clearly, he loves touring though he also stresses deep appreciation for his home and family time. The return of Black Label Society will be his focus near the end of 2026, though announcements about a new metal project with <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=1343412097818633&amp;set=a.640461621447021\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:William Shatner;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">William Shatner<\/a> and the possibility of making new music with Pantera might keep him busy too. He\u2019s also excited about news of \u201cmom\u201d reviving Ozzfest\u2014which he\u2019s played countless times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cHe loves life and he loves making people happy,\u201d says Mrs. Wylde, who hosts the popular podcast <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/honestafshow.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Honest AF;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Honest AF<\/a> with fellow rockstar spouse Daniella Clarke (wife of guitarist Gilby Clarke) offering glimpses at their enduring rock and roll relationships and a lot more. \u201cZakk really puts his most impassioned, heartfelt, sorrow, and his intensity into his music and with this album in particular, it really comes out in the lyrics. Most of the time, he writes from others\u2019 perspectives, but this was the first record he made that he couldn\u2019t help but have some of his feelings in the songs.
