And he could not have predicted he would still be performing at 90 \u2013 in a nursing home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">For six decades, Trincale walked <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patriaindipendente.it\/terza-pagina\/pentagramma\/franco-trincale-informazione-e-politica-quelle-buone\/#true-3\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the streets of Milan<\/a> singing about key moments in history, from 1970s terrorism to<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yw5UOu0ioSI\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> Berlusconi\u2019s election<\/a> and the Iraq war. He has <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/it\/artist\/1660759-Franco-Trincale\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">released more than 30 albums<\/a>, and performed everywhere from the USSR to the US. We meet at the Il Parco delle Cave, an assisted living facility in a nondescript redbrick building, which has been his home for the past two years. Trincale has organised a concert for Valentine\u2019s Day, and the main hall is packed with 150 people \u2013 elderly residents and their relatives. He entertains them with a recently composed song, Long Live Love. Trincale\u2019s voice is struggling with the high notes, but the audience helps him out. After taking a moment to memorise the chorus, they sing and clap to the beat. Trincale\u2019s wife Lina, who has Alzheimer\u2019s and can only communicate with her eyes, is seated in the front row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Decades ago, when many Italians were illiterate, the arrival of a <em>cantastorie<\/em> in a town was a big event. With the rise of TV, their role evolved into wandering musicians who entertained audiences recounting news in a dramatic or ironic manner, accompanied by a guitar or accordion and large illustrated posters. Like other travelling musicians across Europe, the <em>cantastorie<\/em> descend from medieval \u201ctroubadours\u201d, but what sets them apart is that they only sing about real-life stories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Traditionally, <em>cantastorie<\/em> supported themselves through donations from the public and by selling flyers with the lyrics of their <em>cantate<\/em> (or tales) and, later, records. Between the 1920s and 1970s, famous <em>cantastorie<\/em> such as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.teche.rai.it\/1959\/01\/la-storia-narrare\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Ciccio Busacca<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Otello_Profazio\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Otello Profazio<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rosa_Balistreri\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Rosa Balistreri <\/a>and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marino_Piazza\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Marino Piazza<\/a> sang blood-soaked <em>cantate<\/em> about a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.culturasiciliana.it\/52-cantastorie\/busacca-ciccio\/359-lassassinio-di-raddusa\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">young woman killing her rapist in revenge<\/a> or <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vsG6jxF68JU\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">women murdered<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yjG9WUDf3iw\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> by their husbands<\/a>. It\u2019s no coincidence, he says, that \u201cthey emerged at the beginning of the 20th century, when public opinion was forming\u201d. It was social commentary: \u201cSalvatore Di Stefano, a Sicilian <em>cantastorie<\/em>, used to say that when he saw something wrong, it was the time to write a song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trincale become a <em>cantastorie<\/em> out of necessity: \u201cI had just married Lina and left the navy after serving for three years. I tried selling vegetables, it wasn\u2019t working, so I said to myself, \u2018I\u2019ll be a <em>cantastorie<\/em>.\u2019\u201d In 1959, he moved to Milan. He started out performing traditional Neapolitan songs in the city\u2019s main streets, before playing outside factories that were absorbing thousands of migrants from the south at the time. Labour conditions became a theme: \u201cThe workers asked me why I didn\u2019t write about their problems, like the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dpRxN2XIAqM&amp;list=RDdpRxN2XIAqM&amp;start_radio=1\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">renewal of contracts<\/a>. They gave me some suggestions and I put them in the song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cTrincale\u2019s ballads can capture and denounce a problem in a few minutes,\u201d says Geraci. Workers and immigrants saw him as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=f1FvNRm_1WU\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">their voice<\/a>, and wrote him letters about their hardships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Trincale also took an interest in true crime. One of his <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YpXaXtUgQ6c\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">most famous works<\/a> is about the 1969 kidnapping and murder of a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wikipink.org\/index.php\/Ermanno_Lavorini\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">12-year-old boy<\/a>, Ermanno Lavorini. It anticipated true crime podcasts: <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/it\/label\/845873-Il-Ragazzo-Scomparso-A-Viareggio\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">six separate recordings<\/a> followed reports of the investigation in real time, as Trincale sang about the frantic search for the child and the clues and urged the kidnappers to come forward. He even did original reporting: \u201cWhen Trincale <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.associazioneilcantastorieonline.org\/app\/download\/8243360256\/Franco+Trincale+-+Via+Tibaldi.mp3?t=1623590537\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">sang<\/a> about a seven-month-old baby killed by police teargas during <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/libcom.org\/article\/1971-tibaldi-occupation\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the eviction of a occupied house<\/a>, he spoke to the mother. How is that different from journalism?\u201d asks Geraci.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Later, Trincale began performing regularly in a corner<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GmGZVzbUhVo\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> of Piazza Duomo<\/a>, where he sung about <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2000\/dec\/02\/rorycarroll\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Tangentopoli<\/a> \u2013 the early 90s corruption scandal that swept away Italy\u2019s political class \u2013 as well as Diego Maradona, the 2001 G8 summit in Genoa and the advent of mobile phones. It was because of her condition that he decided to move to a retirement home so they could be together: \u201cLina and I have known each other since she was 13 and I was 17, and I am happy to spend the last part of my life with her. I visit her as often as possible. I sing songs to her when she opens her eyes and smiles at me. He has a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@ftrincale\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">YouTube channel<\/a> and shows off a video with 400,000 views: \u201cI am proud to be able to sing and I will do so for as long as I can. I am happy to still be able to stir emotions, also because I have received so much from others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The nursing home staff are supportive: \u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to see a resident who is still able to give a concert in the afternoon,\u201d says Laura Sartori, the manager.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The San Valentino\u2019s concert was a success. But the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OVi32re1Wy8\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">one he held for his 90th birthday<\/a>, in September, was an even bigger one: \u201cThe hall was full \u2013 there was no room for anyone else,\u201d recalls Trincale. He would like to hold a small music workshop for people with Alzheimer\u2019s, such as his wife. But adds: \u201cI should observe them first to see if they respond to the songs. I hope it\u2019s possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Before leaving, Trincale approaches his wife and sings her a song. Not one of his own \u2013 the love of his life is granted a rendition of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F8bQ9gHHh28\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Era de Maggio<\/a>, a Neapolitan classic by Roberto Murolo.
