Is a third season of “Big Little Lies”<\/a> on the way? Probably, although when is a little iffy, says Reese Witherspoon<\/a>, who executive-produced and co-starred in the Emmy-winning HBO series alongside Nicole Kidman<\/a>, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, Zoe Kravitz, Alexander Skarsgaard and others. Based on a novel by Liane Moriarty, season 2 of the mysterious psychological drama hit streaming in 2019, two years after its premiere season.<\/p>\n \u201cWe’re just sort of in early talks \u2026 communicating with Liane Moriarty, who has a lot of ideas about where these characters would be now,” Witherspoon, 49,<\/a> tells USA TODAY. “The children have grown up, they’re now teenagers, it’s been about 10 years\u2026 as you can imagine, parenting those age children’s got its sets of challenges.”<\/p>\n Moriarty is just one of many star scribes Witherspoon<\/a> has worked with. The Oscar winner is as much a literary magnate as she is a film star, these days, thanks to her popular book club and company, Hello Sunshine,<\/a> which has helped steer several book-to-movie adaptations. The process isn’t always easy, she admits.<\/p>\n “You want to capture the essence of the book, and some people are very loyal to the manuscript, but I think you have to have room to make things a little more cinematic,” she says. How she tackles that at Hello Sunshine<\/a>: “We’re very upfront with them about that we might need to change a few things to fit the format of a movie or television structure,” she says. “Filmmaking is more of a collaboration as opposed to writing a novel, which is more of a solo effort.”<\/p>\n She became an author herself for a recent book project, “Gone Before Goodbye,” teaming up with bestselling suspense master Harlan Coben to co-write the thriller, which hit shelves in October 2025.<\/p>\n The experience, she says, “makes me really appreciate how hard these authors work and all the research they have to do to create these characters.”<\/p>\n Witherspoon<\/a> says if she had to choose one title to bring to a desert island, it would be “Broken Country” by Clare Leslie Hall.<\/p>\n “Oh my god, it’s so good,” she says. “It’s a gorgeous love story, but it’s so beautifully written and sparsely written, it’s very well-edited, and the use of language just provokes so many deep feelings about what it means to be alive and be in love.”<\/p>\n It’s part of what she looks for in all her reads. “I love books that take me on a journey to a place I’ve never been,” she says. “Exploring culture and the way of life of different people is a way to expand yourself without ever traveling anywhere.”<\/p>\nHow Reese Witherspoon became a book world powerhouse \u2014 and first-time author<\/h2>\n
