The young female conservatory students of \u201c||: Girls: ||: Chance: ||: Music: ||\u201d aren\u2019t just talented singers, percussionists and composers. They\u2019re visionaries, and in\u00a0Eisa Davis\u2019 American Conservatory Theater world premiere,\u00a0they debate musical ideals like poet-philosophers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The classical girls, Fax (Hillary Fisher) explains, \u201cwant to not reveal themselves \u2014 that\u2019s their control.\u201d That philosophy certainly defines her. She hated\u00a0<\/em>it when her accompanist improvised during a recital.\u00a0It\u2019s not that the jazz girls don\u2019t want control, though. Those musicians, she continues, \u201cwant their control by revealing themselves in the chaos of real time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the Berkeley-set play, directed by Pam MacKinnon, that struggle for power isn\u2019t just artistic. Davis, a Berkeley homegirl of \u201cBulrusher\u201d fame, writes with a cellular-level understanding of subtext. Over and over, as the girls move toward divergent careers, the script builds in seismic shifts that require zero or only glancing words.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Davis, herself a singer-songwriter who\u2019s collaborated with Lin-Manuel Miranda<\/a> on the concept album \u201cWarriors,\u201d also writes with a practitioner\u2019s understanding. \u201cThey think to each other musically,\u201d go one set of stage directions, \u201csaying things they couldn\u2019t say aloud.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
