It\u2019s an eerily pensive cover of Joy Division\u2019s \u2018Insight\u2019, recorded with Bonner Kramer for their upcoming album <em>They Came Like Swallows \u2013 Seven Requiems for the Children Of Gaza<\/em>. \u201cKramer had the idea to cover a Joy Division tune,\u201d Moore said.\u00a0\u201cIt was a left turn from the improvisations we had been tracking, though wholly in keeping with both our sensibilities of light and dark unifying in transcendent songwriting, both of us devotees of \u2018the song\u2019 as well as \u2018the freedom.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kramer added: \u201cI clearly remember what I felt when I first heard track four of <em>Unknown Pleasures<\/em>. It was a masterpiece. A stroke of pure artistic genius. \u2018Insight\u2019 is a criminally under-appreciated tone poem; a benediction of loss, longing, and regret that still touches every cell in my body. It also features Hook\u2019s finest bass guitar invention, singing to me like the sirens of Titan. I\u2019d waited decades to \u2018cover\u2019 this trembling ode to the curse of being human, waiting until I finally had the perfect partner to help me re-imagine it and make it new again. Thurston gave the music the gentle magic and unhurried cries Ian Curtis\u2019 words had always been screaming for, and singing it with him put me right back into that place, that feeling, that time when I first heard the sad pageantry of this tragic man\u2019s exquisite warning: \u2018Time won\u2019t stop for you, or for anyone or anything. It owns us. Multi-instrumentalist Josh Halper and the Convenience\u2019s Nick Corson also play on it, and Lenderman fires out a great guitar solo on the sharp, winding lead single \u2018Dozen Roses\u2019. \u201c\u2018Dozen Roses\u2019 is the second track on <em>Birds of Paradise<\/em>, a Part II to the album opener \u2018Visitation\u2019,\u201d Dollbaum explained in a statement. \u201cThat song is an introduction of sorts to the themes of the record; \u2018magical thinking\u2019 is a way to process the world and the memories I have. \u2018Dozen Roses\u2019 is more about the passing of time, and acknowledgment of never feeling like there is enough of it. It arrives with a music video directed by Jack Haven (<em>I Saw The TV Glow<\/em>). \u201c\u2018Big Thumb\u2019 was written during Olive\u2019s obsession with collecting newspaper clippings and found pieces of writing. She had always wanted to write a song in the way the 90\u2019s industrial scene had by using newspaper clippings to inspire lyrics. Olive collected many different clippings and writings for us and spread them out on the ground, so that when we would begin to play together, Olive on harmonica and me on 12-string guitar, we could sing the words that inspired us most,\u201d Weinberg recalled. \u201cWhat stuck was an almost mantra-like repetition of the words \u2018Holding out the Big Thumb\u2019 which became the song\u2019s conceptual core. The song became a reflection on the feeling of directionlessness in our generation, and how the paths of life that were carved out for previous generations are now void. Today, the singer-songwriter has announced a new project, though it\u2019s actually an EP.<em> Bloom Again<\/em> is out May 8, and it\u2019s led by the wistful acoustic track \u2018Butterflies\u2019. \u201cYou might assume it\u2019s about the giddy feelings of having nervous butterflies when you have a crush, and I suppose it is, but it\u2019s more so about those feelings being crushed, and not knowing what to do with those feelings,\u201d she shared. \u201cI recorded the main guitars and vocals in my home studio in my apartment in Minneapolis, and Philip Brooks added drums, guitar and bass at their home studio in Germany, they have a way of adding depth to songs that feels so magical.
