Which is why everyone should watch it, says Debra Waters<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first thing I did after finishing Louis Theroux\u2019s latest documentary <em>Inside the Manosphere <\/em>(Netflix), was ask my teenage son to watch it. This is not because I saw the opportunity for a teaching moment \u2013 that would have triggered an instant eyeroll \u2013 but because I was curious to know what my teen thought of these men, with their many followers, fancy cars, and big houses. Would he find their lives so appealing that he\u2019d be willing to overlook their misogyny?<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-root\"\/>\n<p id=\"a2ec02f2-05c8-4aea-81b3-f29f8c66c2ab-2\">This was his reaction: <em>\u201cIt\u2019s shocking how much the men talk about how they understand women more than they actually do, and I really noticed that a lot of the women [in the documentary] looked uncomfortable. Also, an influencer trying to publicly shame Louis online was odd. You may feel, as I did, that behind the glamour this is an ugly, troubling environment, but we\u2019d all be remiss if we simply reject what we see without trying to understand the motivation behind it.<\/p>\n<p>The manosphere is huge, and the influencers that reside within it have millions of followers. It\u2019s a big issue, and it&#8217;s having a big impact. Just last week, an <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/assets\/news\/iwd-2026-global-charts-final.pdf\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/assets\/news\/iwd-2026-global-charts-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\"><u>international study by King\u2019s College London<\/u><\/a> found that 31% of Gen Z men think wives should &#8216;obey&#8217; their husbands, as opposed to 13% of Baby Boomers. A real sign that progressive views are now going backwards.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Gen Z men (my son\u2019s generation) are the most likely to agree with traditional ideas about not only women\u2019s roles (such as that a wife should always obey her husband), but also men\u2019s (such as that young men should try to be physically tough, even if not naturally big).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"elk-what-is-the-manosphere\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-what-is-the-manosphere\"><span>What is the manosphere?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"358612cb-2feb-4d25-8d68-bd8539201aa0\">On the surface, there are lots of shiny things to tempt men (and some women) into the contradictory, delusory world of the manosphere \u2013 a mainly online space that espouses misinformation, masculinity (which can be fine) and misogyny (which is not). But, because we live in a capitalist society with an attention economy that values instant gratification, these life hacks seem very seductive.<\/p>\n<p>Louis interviews some big names in the manosphere \u2013 Harrison Sullivan, aka HSTikkyTokky; Justin Waller; Amrou Fudl, aka Myron Gaines; and Nicholas Kenn De Balinthazy, aka Sneako. While most started by uploading relatively benign content, on topics such as fitness, dating, gaming and business, they have since become lauded for their contentious and questionable views on masculinity, misogyny and their strongly anti-feminist stance.<\/p>\n<p>Buying into these views is known as taking the red pill, or \u2018seeing the word for what it is\u2019 \u2013 a reference to the 1999 film <em>The Matrix. <\/em>Typically, fans of the manosphere are distrustful of mainstream media and the machinations of the powers-that-be. Many claim to love women, but you\u2019d be hard-pushed to believe that. There\u2019s nothing wrong with men and women choosing conventional gender roles if that\u2019s what they wish, but this not about tradition, it\u2019s about female subservience. These men think women should be kept in their place, they expect monogamy from their partners but don\u2019t extend the same courtesy, and they see women through one prism \u2013 their bodies.<\/p>\n<p>What Louis Theroux always does so well is leave enough silence between conversations to allow his subjects to unfurl and \u2013 often \u2013 self-sabotage. It\u2019s in this void where the viewers see the true nature of Louis\u2019 subjects, and this is where men\u2019s vulnerability, hurt and arrested development are exposed. When upbringings are discussed, we hear about absent fathers, childhood violence and single parent struggles. This is a problem we can\u2019t blame men for \u2013 it\u2019s societal.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the posturing and swagger, what\u2019s most apparent is fear. When Louis challenges these influencers, they quickly become defensive, as if they\u2019re being attacked, which weakens their argument. They\u2019re a bit like teenagers themselves, and perhaps this is why teen boys are lured by these men in their masses, because kids who are trying to find themselves can relate.<\/p>\n<p>Look beyond the bravado and big biceps and you\u2019ll sense an undercurrent of self-loathing, and it\u2019s well-known that self-hatred can lead to a projection of hatred onto others. And, wow, what loathing \u2013 and it\u2019s not just towards women, but the Jewish and LGBTQ communities. Towards the end of the documentary, a group of young teen boys run up to Sneako and enthusiastically reiterate his anti-Semitic hate speech back to him \u2013 it would be funny if it wasn\u2019t so awful.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"elk-the-content-trap\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-the-content-trap\"><span>The content trap<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"72b2a132-30a1-4856-992e-3e16622d7714\">In fairness, you can see how things spiral for content creators \u2013 desperate to keep and grow their audience, they make more and more extreme content. \u201cDon\u2019t pander to their worst impulses,\u201d says Louis to one influencer, but you can see why they do \u2013 they feel they need to, in order to keep up the lifestyle and image. Louis is unimpressed with these men \u201cselling products to teenagers\u201d (he has three sons himself), but HSTikkyTokky\u2019s reasoning is that he\u2019s just \u201cplaying the game of life\u201d. Compassion on all sides is required.<\/p>\n<p>As a parent, I\u2019m all too aware these things exist \u2013 I\u2019m also aware that I only know the half of it. I can\u2019t hide my son away; I can only hope to steer him away from the hate, make sure he hears both sides, and that he feels he has a voice in a world that\u2019s shifting under his feet.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" id=\"elk-how-to-talk-to-teenagers-about-the-manosphere\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-how-to-talk-to-teenagers-about-the-manosphere\"><span>How to talk to teenagers about the manosphere<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"d545e8e9-b4e3-4b75-b8ee-9ac2c37e77fa\">I asked <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whiteribbon.org.uk\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.whiteribbon.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\"><u>White Ribbon<\/u><\/a>, a leading charity that engages men and boys to prevent violence against women and girls, how to approach the subject with teens. Their CEO Lynne Elliot told us:<\/p>\n<ul id=\"a14f08fb-fb60-4ce5-9ba3-56d2a38ca872\">\n<li><strong>Ask and listen,\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0tell<\/strong> Don\u2019t\u00a0make boys feel like they\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0talk about how\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0feeling or what\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0thinking; hear what\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0got to say and treat it as a discussion, even if you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0agree.
