This year\u2019s awards season has been unlike any other\u2026 down to a bizarre controversy around series of viral comments from Best Actor nominee Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet. While promoting his performance in Marty Supreme during A celebrity.land & Variety Town Hall Event earlier this year<\/a>, Chalamet expressed worry that the theatrical moviegoing experience might go the way of \u201cballet or opera\u201d, where it is up to the artists to \u201ckeep this thing alive\u201d even though \u201cno one cares.\u201d<\/p>\n Chalamet\u2019s comments have inspired a slew of discourse \u2014 and more and more famous faces continue to weigh in. French actress Juliette Binoche, who has herself won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in The English Patient, addressed the ordeal during a Q&A session at the Thessaloniki Intl. Documentary Festival. At first, Binoche joked that: \u201cI thought cinema was a dying art.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what he\u2019s saying,\u201d Binoche went on to add. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter. Don\u2019t make it big. What nourishes your heart and soul is what is important. You can watch a lot of films that are empty and make you dry at the end. What counts is what is nourishing your soul and life.\u201d<\/p>\n Ballet dancer and actress Misty Copeland<\/a>, whose own larger-than-life story was used in the marketing campaign of Marty Supreme, also addressed the backlash around Chalamet at a panel for Aveeno.<\/p>\n \u201cFirst I have to say that it\u2019s very interesting that he invited me to be a part of promoting \u2018Marty Supreme\u2019 with respect to my art form,\u201d\u00a0Copeland began. \u201cI think that it\u2019s important that we acknowledge that, yes, this is an art form that\u2019s not \u2018popular\u2019 and a part of pop culture as movies are, but that doesn\u2019t mean it doesn\u2019t have enduring relevance in culture.\u201d<\/p>\n Copeland also argued that there\u2019s \u201ca reason that the opera and ballet have been around for over 400 years,\u201d adding that \u201c[Chalamet] wouldn\u2019t be an actor and have the opportunities he has as a movie star if it weren\u2019t for opera and ballet and their relevance in that medium. So all of these mediums have a space and we shouldn\u2019t be comparing them.\u201d<\/p>\n With the Academy Awards right around the corner, the fervor around Chalamet\u2019s comments surely isn\u2019t going to die down anytime soon. The ordeal has even made its way to Jeopardy!, with the iconic quiz show poking fun at Chalamet by sharing a clip from their Second Chance tournament final<\/a> from this past January\u2026 which literally featured a \u201cBallet & Opera\u201d category. <\/p>\n A few staples in the ballet and opera community have also had tongue-in-cheek responses to the whole ordeal, with London\u2019s Royal Ballet and Opera posting a video<\/a> of their artists at work. The caption literally called on Chalamet to visit, saying: \u201cEvery night at the Royal Opera House, thousands of people gather for ballet and opera. For the music. For the storytelling. For the sheer magic of live performance.
