Katherine Heigl<\/strong><\/a> has broken her silence after attending an animal charity event held at President Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2018s Mar-a-Lago resort.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnimals don\u2019t vote,\u201d the actress, 47, said in a statement to Us Weekly<\/em> on Wednesday, March 11. \u201cThe only room they don\u2019t like is the euthanasia room at a shelter. They are completely at the mercy of us, and they have no voice of their own.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heigl continued, \u201cThis event was about animal advocacy \u2014 something that has always been deeply personal to me. Anyone who knows me knows that protecting animals is one of my greatest passions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Katherine added that she and her mother, Nancy Heigl<\/strong>, have worked together for years on advocacy for animal rescues through the foundation they named after the actress\u2019 late brother, Jason Heigl<\/strong>. (Jason died at age 15 after being placed on life support following a car accident in 1986.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tPresident Donald Trump\u2019s Mar-a-Lago resort has been a celebrity hotspot long before the businessman entered the Oval Office. While Mar-a-Lago serves as Trump\u2019s permanent residence, the hotel is also a popular venue in Palm Beach. In addition to the Trump family putting on parties, Mar-a-Lago has been used for other stars\u2019 events, including fundraisers, concerts [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMy mother, Nancy, and I have spent years advocating for animals through the Jason Heigl Foundation. As a society, we should all come together to protect the voiceless and the innocent,\u201d Katherine shared. \u201cThis should not be a polarizing issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Katherine added that the event raised \u201cover $5 million to help animals in need.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so grateful to everyone who showed up, supported, and continues to stand up for those who can\u2019t speak for themselves,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n

Katherine made her first public appearance in years at the Wine, Women & Shoes benefit event<\/a> supporting Big Dog Ranch House at Trump\u2019s resort in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, March 8. She was joined by her mom for the event. The president\u2019s daughter in-law, Lara Trump, was the event\u2019s honorary cochair. Other celebrities who attended the function included Jeanine Pirro, Cesar Milan and more.<\/p>\n
