BMG<\/a> has acquired the publishing catalog and sound recordings of Liverpool new wave band A Flock of Seagulls.<\/p>\n

The company described the group as \u201cone of the defining bands of the early 1980s new wave movement in the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n

The deal covers the ownership of US publishing rights and a participation in publishing income of the band\u2019s catalog globally, according to a press release on Thursday (March 12).<\/p>\n

On the recorded music side, BMG<\/b> will now own the band\u2019s core studio albums \u2013\u00a0A Flock of Seagulls<\/i>\u00a0(1982),\u00a0Listen<\/i>\u00a0(1983),\u00a0The Story of a Young Heart\u00a0<\/i>(1984), and\u00a0Dream Come True<\/i>\u00a0(1986).<\/p>\n

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The band and its members were represented in the transaction by Peter Csathy <\/b>of Deep Cuts Media.<\/p>\n

A Flock of Seagulls, formed in Liverpool in 1979, made their global breakthrough in 1982, driven largely by their hit I Ran (So Far Away), <\/i>and other tracks like Space Age Love Song <\/i>and Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You). <\/i><\/p>\n

The band achieved major certifications across their four studio albums, said BMG. On Spotify<\/a>, the band has over 3 million<\/a> monthly listeners.<\/p>\n

For BMG, the acquisition marks its latest after buying the recorded music catalog of Country music superstar\u00a0Jason<\/b>\u00a0Aldean<\/b>, plus a tranche of other rights in a deal worth around\u00a0USD $250 million<\/b>.<\/p>\n

At the time, the company said the acquisition is part of a broader deal that sees the company acquire interests in the recorded catalogs and publishing rights of a music collection from what it calls a \u201ccross-section\u201d of\u00a023<\/b>\u00a0artists<\/b>\u00a0and songwriters.<\/p>\n

In December, BMG\u00a0acquired<\/a>\u00a0the recordings catalog of 90s German rock band\u00a0Liquido<\/b>\u00a0for an undisclosed amount.<\/p>\n

BMG, founded in 2008, now represents more than 3 million songs and recordings, with a roster that includes The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, George Harrison, Blondie, and more.\u00a0The company operates 18 offices across 13 markets and is wholly owned by Bertelsmann<\/a>, the German media conglomerate whose holdings also include RTL Group and Penguin Random House.<\/p>\n\n

Elsewhere at BMG, the company was reported in late January to be in talks to acquire<\/a> Concord<\/a>. Concord previously\u00a0explored a sale in 2022<\/a>, turning down offers of around $5 billion.<\/p>\n

BMG is a division of German media giant\u00a0Bertelsmann.<\/p>\n
