{"id":2330132,"date":"2026-03-16T00:05:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T00:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2330132"},"modified":"2026-03-16T00:05:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T00:05:17","slug":"conan-obrien-retains-his-throne-as-king-of-the-oscars-with-opening-monologue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/conan-obrien-retains-his-throne-as-king-of-the-oscars-with-opening-monologue\/","title":{"rendered":"Conan O&#8217;Brien retains his throne as King of the Oscars with opening monologue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-element=\"story-body\" data-subscriber-content=\"\">\n<p>Security is tight at this year\u2019s Oscar\u2019s awards, and the major concerns came from the opera and ballet communities, Conan O\u2019brien joked as he kicked <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/awards\/live\/oscars-2026-live-updates-winners-list\">off the 98th Academy Awards.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re just mad you left out jazz,\u201d O\u2019Brien quips at Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, who smiled from the crowd. <\/p>\n<p>The \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d actor <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2026-03-09\/timothee-chalamet-ballet-opera-comments-backlash-prove-his-point\">faced backlash<\/a> earlier this month over  remarks he made about the arts during a Variety and celebrity.land town hall with Matthew McConaughey in February.<\/p>\n<p>Chalamet said he appreciated those working to keep movie theaters alive, noting he doesn\u2019t \u201cwant to be working in ballet or opera or things where it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey! Keep this thing alive.\u2019 Even though it\u2019s like no one cares about this anymore.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien acknowledged the \u201cvery chaotic, frightening times,\u201d during Sunday\u2019s awards, all the while landing friendly quips to the star-studded audience during his opening monologue. <\/p>\n<p>The Oscars are \u201cparticularly resonant\u201d during times of turmoil, he said, noting that 31 countries across six continents were represented in the show. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery film we salute is a product of thousands of people speaking different language, working hard to make something of beauty,\u201d O\u2019Brien said. \u201cWe pay tribute tonight, not just to film, but to the ideals of global artistry, collaboration, patience, resilience, and that rarest of qualities today: optimism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The comedian joked that Sunday\u2019s awards was the first time Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos was in a theater. O\u2019Brien also warned the show might get political, and said anyone who is uncomfortable can catch an alternate version of the show \u201chosted by Kid Rock at the Dave and Busters down the street\u201d a jab at the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2026-02-03\/kid-rock-to-perform-for-maga-spheres-alternative-super-bowl-halftime-show\">MAGA-fueled Super Bowl halftime<\/a> show earlier this year. <\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien acknowledged the major movies up for awards this year, with \u201cSinners\u201d receiving a round of applause from the audience. The movie broke records this year with 16 nominations. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m honored to be the last human host of the Academy Awards. Next year it\u2019s gonna be a Waymo with a tux,\u201d O\u2019Brien said. <\/p>\n<p>The comedian, who returned to the Oscars stage Sunday after emceeing last year, started the show with a pre-recorded scene of him backstage, where he was given pale makeup and a short orange wig, resembling Gladys from the movie \u201cWeapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The montage features O\u2019Brien running through film sets of various nominated movies as a group of children run after him, an homage to the movie\u2019s infamous scene. O\u2019Brien even became animated as he appeared in the Netflix movie \u201cKPop Demon Hunters.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien eventually makes it to the Oscars stage, with the children still running after him. <\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Brien\u2019s return was confirmed just weeks after <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/awards\/story\/2025-03-02\/oscars-2025-live-chat\"><u>last year\u2019s awards show<\/u><\/a>, much earlier than the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/awards\/story\/2024-11-15\/conan-obrien-to-host-97th-academy-awards\"><u>typical fall<\/u><\/a> announcement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
